Rutgers-Newark Men's Basketball Comes From Behind To Win 93-89 Over Rowan

Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ  – The Rutgers-Newark men's basketball team came back in the second half to win 93-89 over Rowan University on Saturday. 
 
Guard John Snow (sr. Newark, NJ/Montclair Kimberley) led the Scarlet Raiders with 42 points and six rebounds.  He was 14 for 21 from the floor with two three-pointers and 12 of 17 at the line.  Forward David Azoroh (sr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) contributed with 14 points and forward Jordan McDaniel (sr. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) followed with 13.  Guard Ricky Stephens (sr. Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Reg.) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.   
 
Rutgers-Newark is 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  Rowan has a
6-10 record with a 3-6 conference mark.
 
The Profs had five players that scored in double figures.  Guard Rob DePersia (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) produced a career-high 20 points and dished six assists.  Forward Shawn Wilson (jr. Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant) totaled 15 points while forwards Chris Gross (sr. Cranford, NJ/Roselle Catholic) and Gary Carthan (jr. Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Reg.) each had 12.  Guard Kris O'Connor (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Paul VI) added 10 points.
 
The Scarlet Raiders trailed 42-36 going into the second half.  Gross hit a three-pointer at 18:31 and the Profs were ahead 47-40.  Rutgers-Newark took the lead 49-47 with nine straight points.  Snow scored seven points and McDaniel had two.  Carthan's layup at 15:54 tied the score at 49.  Azoroh and center Dan Brogan (sr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) exchanged baskets and the game was knotted at 51.  The Scarlet Raiders led by seven (62-55) after an 11-4 run that ended at 11:40.  Stephens had two threes in the surge.  Snow's foul shot with 10:27 remaining made the score 65-57. 
 
The Profs pulled within three points (66-63) after a layup by Gross at the eight-minute mark.  McDaniel gave the Scarlet Raiders a 10-point lead (79-69) with two free throws (3:04).  Ofray had two points at the line (1:19) and the score was 86-74.  Rowan battled back within five (89-84) with a 10-3 run and there were 32 seconds left.  DePersia and Wilson each produced four points while Carthan had two.  Snow sank a foul shot (0:16) and the score was 92-87.  With 10 seconds left, DePersia's layup cut the deficit to three (92-89).  McDaniel made the second of two free throws (0:10) to end the game.

In the first half, the Scarlet Raiders trailed by one (12-11) after a jumper by Snow (13:24).  Rowan built a 16-point lead (30-14) with an 18-3 run.  Guard Josh Borrelli (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) scored eight of the 18 points.  Carthan's three at 5:30 made the score 40-27.  Rutgers-Newark had five points by Snow and trailed 40-32 with 3:43 left.  Guard Nick DePersia (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) sank two foul shots (2:33) and the Profs were up 42-32.  Center Dave Lunsford (so. East Orange, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) hit two straight layups (2:16, 0:53) and Rutgers-Newark was down by six (42-36) at the intermission. 
 
Rowan has two road games next week.  The Profs play at Stockton University on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 8 p.m. and Ramapo College on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 3 p.m.
