Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Rowan University women's volleyball team recorded a 3-0 victory over New Jersey City University in conference action on Thursday night.
The Profs have an overall mark of 7-5 and they are 2-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Gothics Knights are 5-5 overall and have a conference record of 0-3. The set scores were 25-12, 25-20 and 25-22.
Outside hitter
Erica O'Hagan (jr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) tallied 14 kills and a .407 hitting percentage. Middle hitter
Maggie Catherina (sr. Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Mem.) added six kills and opposite
Dalton Sanchez (fr. Olney, MD/Sherwood) had five. Defensive specialist/setter
Rebecca Dantonio (jr. Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) collected 28 assists. Libero
Jennifer Vorel (jr. Madison, NJ/Madison) contributed with 15 digs.
For NJCU, outside hitter Georgina Rayo (fr. Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) and outside hitter/setter Amber O'Donnell (fr. East Newark, NJ/Harrison) each registered six kills. Rayo also had nine digs. Setter Rachel McIntyre (so. Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) chipped in with 17 assists and seven digs.
Rowan scored the first seven points of the opening set. O'Donnell's kill got the Gothic Knights to within five points (10-5). The Profs then reeled off eight straight for an 18-5 advantage. The run included two kills by middle hitter
Jamie Shirtz (fr. Mendham, NJ/West Morris Mendham). Rowan held the big lead and won the first set.
Profs' outside hitter
Kristin Akin (fr. Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) tallied three service aces and opposite/outside hitter
Jess Quinlan (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and O'Hagan each had a kill for a 5-0 advantage to start the second set. Rowan led 17-10 then NJCU scored five straight points, cutting the deficit 17-15. Rowan responded with four consecutive tallies and held on to win the second set.
The score was tied six times early on in the third set. It was knotted at 10 then the Gothic Knights registered five straight points for a 15-10 advantage. The Profs used a 6-1 run to tie the set at 16. O'Hagan and Catherina collected two kills apiece. The score was tied at 20 but the Profs converted five of the final seven points, including a kill by Catherina to end the match.
Next, Rowan travels to Eastern University for a tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 26. The Profs face the University of Mary Washington at 1 p.m. and Eastern at 3 p.m.
