Ramapo Softball Wins 8-2 Over Rowan For NJAC Championship

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GLASSBORO, NJ – The Ramapo College softball team won 8-2 over Rowan University to capture the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship on Sunday afternoon.  The conference tournament was held at Rowan University.   
 
It is the first conference title for the Roadrunners.  Ramapo (28-12-1) earns the NJAC automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.  Rowan (36-6) will have to wait for an at-large berth when the teams are announced on May 4 at 10 a.m. on ncaa.com.  Prior to the game, Ramapo defeated Kean University 5-4 to advance to the conference final.

Ramapo College held on for a 5-4 victory over Kean University in the championship round. 
 
Right-hander Katrina Buczkowski (fr. Buffalo, NY/Claremont) was the winning pitcher.  In 6.2 innings, she allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out six batters.  Righty Courtney Yard (sr. Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) took the loss.  She (19-7) gave up eight hits and five runs, two earned.
 
For the Roadrunners, right fielder Danielle Saporito (jr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) was two-for-four with a double, one RBI and one run.  Third baseman Mikayla Melendez (jr. Woodland Park, NJ/Passiac Valley) contributed with a triple, one RBI and one run.  Second baseman Kim LaPenta (sr. Rockaway, NJ/Butler) and designated player Melanie Walling (jr. Freehold, NJ/Freehold) drove in one run apiece.  Left fielder Grace Brennan (so. Old Bridge, NJ/Academy for Allied Health & Biomedical Sciences), shortstop Nicole Hernandez (so. Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) and center fielder Jaclyn Lima (sr. Linden, NJ/Linden) all crossed the plate one time. 
 
Yard recorded a homer, two RBIs and two runs.  Second baseman Emily Sabo (so. Rahway, NJ/Rahway) produced two hits in three at bats and one RBI.  Shortstop Cayleen Rizo (fr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and left fielder Brooke Ennis (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) each scored one run.   
 
Game #11:  #2 Ramapo College 8, #2 Rowan 2 (Ramapo wins NJAC title.)
Ramapo College won the NJAC title with an 8-2 victory over Rowan University.  Right-hander Christina Brizek (fr. Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) went the distance on the mound for the win.  She (8-5) only allowed five hits and two runs, one earned.  Righty Beth Ann Hyland (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) had the loss (17-4). 
 
The Roadrunners totaled 12 hits. Saporito, LaPenta, Walling, Brennan and Hernandez all produced two hits.  LaPenta and Brennan each drove in two runs.  Brennan also scored twice.  Both of LaPenta's hits were doubles.  Catcher Melissa Moreno (jr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford), Saporito, Walling and Hernandez registered one RBI apiece. 
 
For the Profs, catcher Alyssa Sims (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) was two-for-two with one run.  Second baseman Alysa Romero (sr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) and center fielder Shannon Costello (sr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) each contributed with one hit and one RBI.  Third baseman Jessica Phillips (sr. Woolwich Twp., NJ/Kingsway Reg.) scored one run.
