Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ – The fourth seed The College of New Jersey upset the top seed Rowan University, 2-1 in the second round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Softball Championship Tournament on Friday. The double elimination tournament continues at Rowan on May 2-3.
On Saturday, Rowan (34-5) plays William Paterson University (27-10-1) at 10 a.m. In the second round, #5 Kean University eliminated #6 Rutgers-Camden with a 2-0 shutout. #2 Ramapo defeated #3 William Paterson, 3-1.
Ashtin Helmer (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) was the winning pitcher. She (9-5) gave up eight hits and one earned run while striking out five batters. Right-hander
Beth Ann Hyland (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) took the loss. She (16-3) allowed seven hits and two runs, one earned. Hyland struck out five batters.
The Profs scored in the top of the fifth inning. Left fielder
Mia Baldassari (fr. Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) recorded a double to left field. With two outs, third baseman
Jessica Phillips (sr. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) drove in Baldassari with a double to left center.
In the bottom half, the Lions took the lead with two runs. Left fielder Madison Levine (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) had a base hit. Center fielder Christine Desiderio (jr. Babylon, NY/Babylon) reached base on a fielder's choice. Second baseman Bria Bartsch (fr. Montville, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Academy) knocked in Levine with a base hit. Desiderio came home on an error with catcher Jamie Purcell (jr. Nutley, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Academy) at bat.
Bartsch ended the game with three hits in three at bats and one RBI. First baseman Jess Stevenson (fr. Belmar, NJ/Red Bank Reg.) contributed with two hits, one double. For Rowan, second baseman
Alysa Romero (sr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) was two-for-four.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students, senior citizens and children. The conference champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
