Box Score STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Rowan University softball team won 4-1 at the College of Staten Island on Thursday evening.
Right-hander
Beth Ann Hyland (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) pitched a complete game for the victory. She (14-2) scattered five hits and allowed one unearned run. Righty Jacqueline Cautela (so. Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) had the loss on the mound. She (12-5) gave up seven hits and four runs, three earned.
The Profs are 31-4 overall while the Dolphins have a 21-8 record. This week, Rowan is ranked first in the NCAA East Region and seventh in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 Poll.
Catcher
Alyssa Sims (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) was two-for-three with a triple and one run. First baseman
Damariz Mercado (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) contributed with a double and two RBIs. Shortstop
Shilah Snead (jr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) produced a double and scored one run. Left fielder Mia Baldasssari (fr. Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) and pinch runner
Sierra Machinski (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) each crossed the plate one time.
Staten Island third baseman Christina Tufano (jr. Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) had two hits in three at bats and scored one run. Right fielder Chyanne Gilliam (jr. Staten Island, NY/New Dorp) posted the RBI.
Rowan got on the scoreboard in the first inning. Machinski scored on Mercado's sacrifice fly. The Profs had three runs in the top of the seventh. Sims recorded a triple and came home on a passed ball. With the bases loaded, third baseman
Jessica Phillips (sr. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) walked and Snead touched the plate. Mercado registered her second sac fly that brought home Baldassari. Staten Island's run came in the bottom half. Tufano singled and advanced to second on an error. She scored on Gilliam's base hit to left field.
Rowan hosts Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m. in the final doubleheader of the regular season.
