Box Score 2 GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept New Jersey City University, 8-0 and 11-0 on Saturday afternoon. Both games were in five innings because of the eight run rule.
The Profs have a 30-2 record with a 12-2 New Jersey Athletic Conference mark. They are ranked first in the NCAA East Region and ninth in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 Poll this week. The Gothic Knights drop to 2-24 overall and 0-14 in the conference.
Right-hander
Beth Ann Hyland (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) had the win on the mound in the first contest. Hyland (13-1) threw three hitless innings and struck out eight of the nine batters she faced. Newcomer
Rachel Gagliardo (fr. Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) only allowed one hit in the last two innings and she had three strikeouts. Lefty Ashley Latushko (sr. Kearny, NJ/Kearny) had the loss.
Second baseman
Alysa Romero (sr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) and designated player
Morgan Smith (fr. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) each drove in two runs and had a double and one run. Third baseman
Jessica Phillips (sr. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) contributed with two hits, a double and one RBI. Catcher
Alyssa Sims (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) went two-for-three with one RBI and one run.
Left fielder
Mia Baldassari (fr. Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) chipped in with a double and one RBI. She crossed the plate two times. Shortstop
Shilah Snead (jr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.), pinch runner
Sammy Vradenburg (so. Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) and center fielder
Shannon Costello (sr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) all scored one run.
The Profs led 2-0 after the first inning. Snead scored on Baldassari's double up the middle. Baldassari later came home on an error. Rowan added five more runs in the second. Romero knocked in two with a double and Baldassari scored on a wild pitch. Smith and Phillips followed with back-to-back RBI doubles. In the bottom of the fifth, Sims singled to center, scoring Vradenburg.
Right-hander
Allison Nolan (jr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) picked up her 10th win in the nightcap. She (10-0) scattered four hits in three innings and had six strikeouts. Rookie
Ashley Lesch (fr. Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) struck out three batters in two innings and did not surrender a hit. Latushko suffered the loss in the second contest.
Snead totaled two hits, three RBIs, a home run and two runs. Phillips posted three RBIs and a homer. Costello chipped in with two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Romero and Smith each knocked in a run. Baldassari and Smith both scored twice while Vradenburg and Sims had one run apiece.
Costello tallied a RBI single in the second inning for a 1-0 advantage. Rowan was ahead 5-0 after four runs in the third. Sims crossed the plate on a sac fly by Romero. Smith's sacrifice fly brought home Snead. Phillips registered a two-run home run. The Profs collected six runs in the fourth inning. Snead smashed a three-run homer. Baldassari and Romero crossed the plate on an error and Smith also came home because of an error.
Rowan is home again on Tuesday, April 21 against William Paterson University at 3 p.m.
