Softball Wins 5-4 In Nine Innings Over Stockton

Third baseman Jessica Phillips
Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won 5-4 in nine innings over Stockton University on Sunday afternoon.  The contest was rescheduled from April 10 because the second game of the doubleheader was rained out.

Third baseman Jessica Phillips (sr. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) knocked in pinch runner Rosalie Hood (fr. Egg Harbor City, NJ/Cedar Creek) for the victory.  Hood started on second base because of the international tie-breaker rule and advanced to third on a sac bunt by first baseman Damariz Mercado (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield).

Right-hander Allison Nolan (jr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) was the winning pitcher.  In six relief innings, she only allowed one hit and one unearned run.  Pitcher Samantha Shockey (jr. Deptford, NJ/Deptford) had the loss on the mound.  She (5-3) gave up two unearned runs on four hits.

The Profs are 26-2 overall and 8-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  The Ospreys have a 14-7 record with a 4-6 conference mark.

Rowan tied the score at three in the fifth inning.  Right fielder Sierra Machinski (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) singled up the middle and designated player Morgan Smith (fr. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) crossed the plate.  In the eighth, the Ospreys had a RBI single by Shockey to lead 4-3.  Machinski came home in the bottom half on shortstop Shilah Snead's (jr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) out.

Phillips ended the game with three hits in five at bats, a double and three RBIs.  Left fielder Mia Baldassari (fr. Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) contributed with three hits and one run.  Center fielder Shannon Costello (sr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) chipped in with two hits.  Second baseman Alysa Romero (sr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) scored one time.

For Stockton, left fielder Marisa Ortiz (sr. Manchester, NJ/Manchester Twp.) and center fielder Nicole Tomo (jr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) each scored one run while pinch runners Chelsea Thomas (fr. Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) and Alison Bastien (fr. Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) had one run apiece.  First baseman Dominique Dorris (jr. Mantua, NJ/Clearview Reg.) drove in a run.

The Ospreys led 3-0 after the top half of the third inning.  Bastien scored the first run on an error and Tomo touched the plate when Shockey was out at first.  Dorris singled home Ortiz.  The Profs trailed 3-2 after the bottom of the third.  Phillips drove in both runs with a base hit to right field.

Rowan travels to Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday, April 14 for a 3 p.m. conference doubleheader.
