Softball Wins 12-4 and 13-0 Over Montclair State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won 12-4 and 13-0 over conference opponent Montclair State University on Sunday afternoon.  Both games were five innings. 
 
The Profs are undefeated with a 20-0 record while the Red Hawks are 3-7 overall.  It was the first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) games for Rowan and Montclair State. 
 
Right-hander Beth Ann Hyland (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) had both wins on the mound.  In the first game, she pitched the last two innings and only allowed one hit.  Right-hander Brooke Powers (jr. Newton, NJ/Pope John XXIII) had the loss (2-5).
 
Left fielder Mia Baldassari (fr. Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) contributed with two hits, four RBIs, a double and one run.  Second baseman Alysa Romero (sr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) had two hits in two at bats, three RBIs and two runs scored.  Romero produced a double and a home run.  Shortstop Shilah Snead (jr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) chipped in with two hits, one RBI and three runs.
 
For the Red Hawks, first baseman Melissa Rustemeyer (sr. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) recorded a grand slam.  Shortstop Brianna Davidson (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) and catcher Melany Zeller (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) each registered two hits.  Left fielder Lauren Guillen (so. Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus), Zeller and Powers all scored on Rustemeyer's homer.
 
The Profs had RBI singles by designated player Morgan Smith (fr. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) and first baseman Damariz Mercado (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) in the first inning.  Montclair State went ahead in the top of the third on Rustemeyer's grand slam.  In the bottom half, Romero tied the scored with a two-run homer. 
 
In the fourth, Baldassari plated two runs with a single and Romero drove in Snead with a double.  Third baseman Jessica Phillips' (sr. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) double brought home Mercado in the fifth.  Pinch hitter Sara Finnegan (so. South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) and Snead had back-to-back RBI base hits.  Baldassari ended the game early with a two-RBI double. 
 
Hyland (8-0) threw three innings and gave up three hits for the victory in the nightcap.  Right-hander Rebecca Coleman (so. Edison, NJ/JP Stevens) was the losing pitcher (1-2). 
 
Smith led the way with three hits, four RBIs, a double, one home run and two runs scored.  Romero totaled three hits, two doubles, three RBIs and two runs.  Snead added three hits, one RBI and two runs.
 
Baldassari collected two hits, one RBI and two runs.  Center fielder Shannon Costello (sr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) tallied two hits, two runs scored and one RBI.  Right fielder Sierra Machinski (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) had one hit, two RBIs and one run scored.
 
Rowan travels to The College of New Jersey on Tuesday, March 31 for a 3 p.m. NJAC doubleheader.
