Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, FL – The Rowan University softball team started its Florida trip with a 5-0 shutout against Simpson College and a 7-2 victory over Marietta College on Friday. The Profs are undefeated with an 8-0 record.
Right-hander
Beth Ann Hyland (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) went the distance on the mound for the shutout against Simpson. She (4-0) scattered six hits and had four strikeouts. Righty Riley Fisher (jr. Des Moines, IA)/East) was the losing pitcher. She (7-2) gave up nine hits and five runs, four earned. Simpson, ranked 18th, has an 18-2 record on the season.
Left fielder
Mia Baldassari (fr. Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) led the way with two hits (three bats), a triple, three RBIs and one run scored. Catcher
Morgan Smith (fr. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) contributed with two hits in four at bats and two RBIs. Right fielder
Alyssa Sims (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) chipped in with two hits and two runs. Pinch runner
Rosalie Hood (fr. Egg Harbor City, NJ/Cedar Creek) and third baseman
Jessica Phillips (sr. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) each scored a run. Phillips also had one hit. Shortstop
Shilah Snead (jr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) produced a triple and second baseman
Alysa Romero (sr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) had a double.
For the Storm, right fielder Stacie Brown (sr. Des Moines, IA/East) and second baseman Ashley Prettyman (sr. Des Moines, IA/East) registered two hits apiece. Prettyman had one double.
The Profs got on the scoreboard with three runs in the third inning. Sims led off with a single and went to second on Snead's sac bunt. Baldassari recorded a triple down the left field line, scoring Sims. Hood and Romero came home on Smith's single to left field. Rowan tacked on two runs in the sixth. Baldassari drove in Phillips and Sims with a hit up the middle. Phillips and Sims both got on base with singles.
Versus Marietta (5-5), rookie
Ashley Lesch (fr. Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) was the winning pitcher in relief. She (2-0) threw three innings and did not allow a hit or a run. Right-hander Kristina LaRocca (fr. Strasburg, OH/Strasburg Franklin) took the loss. In 2.2 innings, she gave up 11 hits and seven runs, six earned.
Baldassari was three for four with two RBIs and one run. Romero totaled three hits (four at bats), a double, one RBI and one run scored. Smith collected two hits, one double, two RBIs and one run. Snead added one hit, one RBI and one run. Designated player
Ashley DeYoung (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) went two for three at the plate and had one run. Sims tallied a double and one run scored.
The Profs had a 5-0 lead after scoring three runs in the first inning and two in the second. In the first, Smith knocked in two runs with a double and center fielder
Shannon Costello (sr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) singled in the third run. Baldassari recorded a RBI single in the second inning and she crossed the plate on Romero's base hit to right field. Marietta's two runs came in the top of the third and Rowan followed with two in the bottom half. Snead produced a sacrifice fly that scored first baseman
Damariz Mercado (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield). Baldassari followed with a RBI single.
Next, Rowan plays Husson University (ME) at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday (March 14) and Muskingum University (OH) at 2:30 p.m.
