GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team has started the season 9-0 for the first time since 1999 after an 84-51 victory against Ramapo College on Saturday afternoon.
The Profs began the 1999-00 campaign with 12 straight victories. Rowan has a 5-0 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Roadrunners have an overall record of 3-7 and they are 1-4 in the conference.
Guard/forward
Kaitlin Schullstrom (gr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) led all scorers with 20 points. Guard/forward
Alex Raring (so. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) netted 10 points off the bench. Guards
Summer Crilley (so. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) and
Valerie Garofalo (jr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) each recorded nine points. Guard/forward
Melissa Lake (gr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) added eight points and 10 boards.
For Ramapo, forward Kellie Lane (jr. Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) collected 16 points. Guard Alexandra Seedes (fr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) chipped in with 13 points. Guard Jina Crawford (so. New City, NY/Paramus Catholic) contributed with eight points. Forward Bintou Berete (jr. Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) had nine rebounds.
In the first quarter, the score was tied at six (7:31). Rowan then used an 11-2 run that included nine points by Schullstrom to take a 17-8 lead with 3:44 on the clock. Ramapo ended the period with a 12-4 spurt, cutting the deficit to one point (21-20). Seedes recorded six points, Crawford had four and Lane made two.
The Profs scored the first 11 points of the second, making the score 32-20 at the 6:20 mark. Schullstrom tallied five points, Raring collected four and Lake added two. Rowan was ahead 38-28 (3:08) then the Roadrunners got consecutive baskets from forward Alyson Oostdyk (sr. Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) (2:32) and Lane (1:33), trimming the lead to six (38-32). Rowan went into the break with a 42-34 advantage. Schullstrom poured in 14 first half points.
The Profs tallied nine points to start the third quarter and outscored the Roadrunners 21-8 in the period. Rowan extended the cushion to 22 points (61-39) on a triple by Crilley with 2:24 remaining. The Profs were out in front 63-42 heading into the fourth. Rowan held the lead and extended it to the final margin of 33. The Profs allowed just 17 points in the second half.
Rowan hosts Widener University on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 1 p.m.
