Box Score UNION, NJ – The Rowan University women's volleyball team lost a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match to Kean University, 3-0 on Tuesday night.
The Cougars have an overall record of 16-16 and they are 4-3 in the conference. The Profs' overall mark is 11-14 and they have a 5-3 record in the NJAC. The set scores were 25-17, 25-18 and 25-20.
Outside hitter Kassie Hernandez (sr. San Diego, CA/LaCosta Canyon) accumulated 11 kills, seven digs, three blocks and two service aces. Outside hitter Calli Scheuermann (so. Kenilworth, NJ/Roselle Catholic) recorded eight kills and six digs. Setter Kendall Sonico (so. Los Angeles, CA/Warren) tallied 15 assists and seven digs. Defensive specialist Lisa DeGroot (sr. Laguna Beach, CA/Capistrano Valley) chipped in with 13 digs. Middle hitter Rachael Wells (jr. Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) had nine blocks and outside hitter Brett Harper (fr. Vero Beach, FL/St. Edward's), eight.
For Rowan, outside hitter
Danielle Havlicek (sr. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) collected 11 kills and five digs. Setter
Mary-Grace Testa (so. Kearny, NJ/Mount Saint Dominic Academy) contributed with 15 assists, six digs and two service aces. Defensive specialist/setter
Rebecca Dantonio (jr. Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) added nine assists and four digs. Libero
Jennifer Vorel (jr. Madison, NJ/Madison) had 21 digs.
The first set was knotted at three, nine, 10, 11 and 12. The Cougars recorded the next nine points to take a 21-12 advantage. DeGroot recorded five service aces during the spurt. The Profs could not recover and lost the first set 25-17.
Rowan trailed 7-6 in the second set then Kean collected four straight points for an 11-6 lead. The Profs tied the set at 11 with five unanswered. The Cougars responded with a 7-1 run for an 18-12 advantage. Harper had two kills and Wells tallied one. The Profs cut the deficit to four points (18-14), but Kean won the second set by seven (25-18).
In the third set, Rowan fell behind 3-0 then tallied four straight points that included two service aces by Testa for a 4-3 lead. The set remained close and the score was tied at 10 and 14. Kean used a 6-0 run to open up a six-point cushion (20-14). Hernandez had two kills. The Profs got to within three points (21-18), but could get no closer. Hernandez ended the set with a kill.
Rowan hosts a quad match on Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24. The Profs face Cabrini College on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Rec Center.
