UNION, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team ended the game on a 25-7 run and defeated Kean University, 75-64 on Saturday afternoon.
The Profs trailed 57-50 with 7:58 to go in the second half then went on the run to come away with an 11-point victory. Guards
Anyssa Sanchez (so. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) and
Kaitlin Schullstrom (jr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) along with center
Kate Matthews (jr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) each scored five points. Rowan captured the lead for good, 63-61 on a layup by Matthews (3:54). The Profs made six free throws in the final 3:22 to extend their advantage and ice the game.
The Profs have an overall record of 10-3 and they are 6-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Cougars fall to 8-6 overall with a 3-4 conference mark. Schullstrom and Matthews scored 13 points apiece. Matthews also grabbed nine rebounds and Schullstrom produced eight rebounds and four assists. Guard
Valerie Garofalo (so. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) chipped in with 12 points and guard
Bria Hill (sr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) added 11.
For Kean, forward Jazmine Davis (jr. Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Reg.) topped all scorers with 23 points. Center Najha Treadwell (fr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) poured in 22 points and corralled 11 rebounds.
The Cougars tied the contest at 34 to start the second half on a basket by Davis. The game was then tied four times, including at 43 with 15:31 to play. Rowan had a 48-45 advantage after two free throws by Hill (12:21). Kean then used a 12-2 spurt to go out in front 57-50 (7:58). Guard Deserai Vazquez (fr. Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) produced four points, while four other Cougars each scored two points.
Kean recorded the first nine points of the game for a 9-0 lead (15:52). Davis tallied six points and Treadwell, three. A three-pointer by guard
Jade Bonder (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) (15:02) and a jumper by Matthews (13:59) trimmed the deficit to four (11-7). Forward
Melissa Lake's (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) layup got Rowan to within one (17-16) at the 9:36 mark. The Profs trailed 21-18 (7:48), then went on an 11-2 run, that included points from five different players for a 29-23 lead (3:35). The Cougars scored the final three points of the half on a basket by Treadwell (0:43) and guard AnnaRose Pierre's (sr. East Orange, NJ/Newark Tech) free throw (0:18), making the score 34-32 at the break.
Rowan hosts William Paterson University on Wednesday, January 14 at 8 p.m.
