Box Score MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Rowan University women's volleyball team lost its New Jersey Athletic Conference match (NJAC) at Montclair State University, 3-0 on Tuesday night.
The set scores were 25-19, 25-21 and 25-17. The Profs are 6-7 overall and have a 1-1 record in the NJAC. The Red Hawks have an overall mark of 12-3 and they are 1-1 in the conference.
For Rowan, opposite/outside hitter
Kelsey Mazurek (jr. Easton, PA/Easton Area) had six kills, while middle hitter
Morgan Mende (jr. Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) collected five. Setter
Rebecca Dantonio (so. Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) recorded 10 assists and four digs. Libero
Jennifer Vorel (so. Madison, NJ/Madison) and outside hitter
Erica O'Hagan (so. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) each accumulated five digs.
Opposite/outside hitter Hayley Merrill (fr. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) had nine kills to lead Montclair State. Outside hitter Courtney Matlock (so. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) and opposite Leah Stine (so. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) added eight kills apiece. Setter Angela Campo (sr. Washington Twp., NJ/Westwood) collected 36 assists, while outside hitter Melissa Terpstra (so. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) registered eight digs. Middle blocker Madison Maute (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) had seven kills and five blocks.
The first set was tied at three, then Montclair State went on a 10-3 run for a 13-6 lead. Terpstra had two service aces and Merrill recorded two kills during the spurt. The Red Hawks then held a 16-10 advantage and scored four straight points, making the score 20-10. The Profs got back to within four at 21-17, but Montclair State tallied four of the final six points to win the set.
In the second set, Mende tied the score at seven with a kill. Matlock tallied two kills in a 6-2 run that gave the Red Hawks a 13-9 lead. The Profs scored five out of the next six points to tie the score at 14. Rowan went ahead 18-17, but Montclair State ended the set on an 8-3 run. The Red Hawks took an early lead in the third set, but the score was tied at six. The score was knotted at seven, but Montclair State scored the next four points to open up an 11-7 cushion. The Profs trailed 12-10 after a kill by Mazurek, but that was as close as they would get for the remainder of the set.
Rowan travels to Gallaudet University for the Worthington Classic on Friday, September 26. The Profs face #1 Hope College at 4 p.m. and Messiah College at 8 p.m.
