Box Score ITHACA, NY – The Rowan University softball team shut out SUNY Oneonta, 7-0 in the first round of the NCAA Regional on Friday. The regional continues Saturday-Sunday, May 10-11 at Ithaca College.
In the other first round game, Ithaca edged Penn State Altoona, 2-1. Rowan (35-10) plays Ithaca (25-12) on Saturday at 11 a.m. Penn State Altoona (29-10) faces SUNY Oneonta (29-10) at 1:30 p.m.
The national softball tournament is double elimination. The winner from each regional advances to the Super Regional, Friday-Saturday, May 16-17. The NCAA Championship Tournament is scheduled for Thursday-Monday, May 22-26 at the University of Texas at Tyler.
Right-hander Krysti Maronski (sr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) went six innings for the victory. She (21-5) only allowed two hits and had six strikeouts. Righty Beth Ann Hyland (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) threw a hitless seventh inning. Sabrina DeAngelis (fr. East Meadow, NY/Kellenberg) was the losing pitcher. In five innings, she (17-6) gave up five runs, three earned and nine hits.
The Profs totaled 11 hits and five were doubles. Center fielder Shannon Costello (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) was three for three with two doubles, one RBI and one run scored. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (sr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) contributed with two doubles and one run scored. Third baseman Jess Phillips (jr. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) added a double, one RBI and one run scored.
Second baseman Alysa Romero (jr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) produced two hits (four at bats) and one RBI. First baseman Damariz Mercado (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) chipped in with a RBI and one run scored. Designated player Ashley DeYoung (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills), catcher Meagan Lee (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) and Romero all scored one time.
Center fielder Katie O'Gorman (fr. Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and right fielder Meaghan Foster (so. Walden, NY/Valley Central) each had one hit in two at bats for the Red Dragons.
Rowan scored three runs in the second inning. Phillips drove in Romero with a double to right center. Costello followed with a single that plated Lee. Phillips came home on a ground out by Mercado.
The Profs added two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Arcella reached base with a double to right field and scored on Romero's base hit up the middle. DeYoung crossed the plate on an error. An error in the sixth allowed Costello and Mercado to both score.

There are 62 teams that are competing in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Tournament. There are 14 four team regional sites and two three team regionals. Forty-two conferences received automatic bids (Pool A) and one independent was selected for the championship from Pool B. The 19 remaining schools were selected on an at-large basis from the automatic qualifying conferences and the remaining independent institutions in Pool B.
