Box Score WAYNE, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won 4-1 in the third round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament. The conference tournament is being held Saturday-Sunday, May 3-4 at William Paterson University.
It was the second loss for the top seeded Pioneers (30-9) in the double elimination tournament. In the first game on Saturday, the second seed Montclair State University defeated the sixth seed Rutgers-Camden, 6-1. In the last game on Saturday, the fourth seed Kean University defeated Montclair State, 3-2. The Red Hawks and the Scarlet Raptors were also eliminated.
The Profs (32-10) are the third seed in the NJAC tournament. On Sunday, Rowan plays Kean at 11 a.m. The conference champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
Right-hander Krysti Maronski (sr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) was the winning pitcher. Maronski (19-5) threw a complete game and gave up one run on six hits. She had eight strikeouts. Righty Allison Podmajersky (fr. Red Bank, NJ/Middletown S.) had the loss. In 0.2 innings, she (9-6) allowed three hits and four runs.
Second baseman Alysa Romero (jr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) was two for three with a double and one RBI. Catcher Meagan Lee (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) contributed with a double and two RBIs. Romero and Lee each scored one run. Third baseman Jess Phillips (jr. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) chipped in with a double and one RBI. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (sr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and designated player Ashley DeYoung (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) added one hit and one run scored apiece.
William Paterson's run was a solo home run by center fielder Kelsey Principe (jr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) in the top of the first inning. Rowan answered with four runs in the bottom half. Romero had a RBI double to right center that scored Arcella. Lee knocked in two runs with a double to left field. DeYoung and Romero crossed the plate. Lee came home on a double by Phillips.
