Box Score ROCHESTER, NY – The University of Rochester softball team won 3-0 in nine innings over Rowan University in the second game of the NCAA Super Regional on Saturday. The Yellowjackets advance to the national championship tournament.
First baseman Nina Korn (sr. Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) recorded a three-run homer in the top of the ninth. She also had a three-run shot in the Yellowjackets' 5-0 win against the Profs in the first game of the Super Regional on Thursday.
Rochester (32-12) plays the winner of the Super Regional between Wis.-Whitewater and Illinois Wesleyan on Thursday, May 22 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The national championship tournament is scheduled for Thursday-Monday, May 22-26 at the University of Texas at Tyler.
Rowan ends the season with a 37-12 record. This was the Profs' 22nd appearance and fourth straight in the NCAA postseason. Rowan received an automatic bid to the national tournament as the champion of the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Right-hander Eleni Wechsler (fr. Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) was the winning pitcher. She threw 8.1 innings and only gave up two hits. Wechsler had eight strikeouts. Righty Krysti Maronski (sr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) took the loss. She (23-7) allowed three runs on four hits and struck out 16 batters for the school record. Maronski also set the University mark for strikeouts in a season with 259. The old record was 246 by Colleen Oswald in 2006. She tied the mark for strikeouts in a game (14) twice this season.
Maronski was named to the Super Regional All-Tournament Team along with shortstop Shilah Snead (so. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.), left fielder Jennifer Arcella (sr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and designated player Ashley DeYoung (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills).
Second baseman Tayler Fravel (sr. Sandy Creek, NY/Sandy Creek) and shortstop Meghan Hennessy (sr. Hamburg, NY/Immaculata Academy) each contributed with a hit and one run scored. Left fielder Shelby Corning (fr. Arvada, CO/Pomona) had one hit in three at bats.
For the Profs, center fielder Shannon Costello (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) produced two hits (three at bats) and one double. Maronski added one hit.
