Box Score ROCHESTER, NY – The Rowan University softball team lost to the University of Rochester, 5-0 in the first game of the NCAA Super Regional on Thursday afternoon.
The three-game series continues on Friday, May 16 at 1 p.m. The team that wins two games at the Super Regional advances to the national championship tournament. The Profs have a 37-11 record while the Yellowjackets are 31-12 overall. The NCAA Championship Tournament is scheduled for Thursday-Monday, May 22-26 at the University of Texas at Tyler.
Right-handed pitcher Brittany Grage (jr. Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) recorded the five-hit shutout. She is 17-6 on the season. Righty Krysti Maronski (sr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) took the loss. She (23-6) gave up two runs on four hits.
Rochester produced eight hits, including two home runs and one triple. Shortstop Meghan Hennessy (sr. Hamburg, NY/Immaculata Academy) was three for three with a triple and two runs scored. Designated player Lauren Muni (so. Clarence, NY/Clarence) contributed with two hits (three at bats) and one homer. First baseman Nina Korn (sr. Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) chipped in with two hits, a home run and three RBIs. Second baseman Tayler Fravel (sr. Sandy Creek, NY/Sandy Creek) scored one run.
For the Profs, shortstop Shilah Snead (so. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and designated player Ashley DeYoung (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) each posted a double. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (sr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley), second baseman Alysa Romero (jr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) and center fielder Shannon Costello (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) each had one hit.
The Yellowjackets scored their first run in the third inning. With two outs, Hennessy tripled to center field and continued home on an error. Muni led off the fourth with a solo shot to left center. In the fifth inning, Korn blasted a three-run homer down the left field line. It was her 13th home run this year.
Rowan received an automatic bid to the national tournament as the champion of the New Jersey Athletic Conference. This is the Profs' 22nd appearance and fourth straight in the NCAAs. Rochester won the Liberty League title for a berth to the postseason. It is the Yellowjackets' fifth trip to the NCAA tournament.
