Box Score 2 JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won two games, 12-0 and 11-1 at New Jersey City University on Sunday afternoon. Both games were five innings because of the eight-run rule.
The Profs are 16-7 overall and 3-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Gothic Knights have a 4-20 record with a 0-6 conference mark.
Right-hander Krysti Maronski (sr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) threw three hitless innings for the first victory. Maronski (9-3) struck out all nine batters that she faced. Righty Allison Nolan (so. Red Bank, NJ/Middletown S.) pitched the final two innings. Right-handed pitcher Taylor Setar (jr. Carteret, NJ/Carteret) had the loss on the mound.
In the opener, Rowan compiled 16 hits, four doubles and three home runs. Shortstop Shilah Snead (so. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) contributed with three hits (four at bats), a double, one RBI and two runs scored. First baseman Damariz Mercado (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) was three for three with two RBIs. She had a double and scored one run.
Second baseman Alysa Romero (jr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) and designated player Ashley DeYoung (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) each chipped in with two hits and a home run. Romero had two RBIs and DeYoung scored twice. Right fielder Sammy Vradenburg (fr. Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) added a double, two RBIs and one run scored.
In the first inning, Romero had a two-run homer to left field. She knocked in Snead who got on base with a double. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (sr. HillsdaleNJ/Pascack Valley) recorded a grand slam in the second and DeYoung registered a solo shot. Mercado plated right fielder Dana Cafone (so. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) with a double in the third inning. Cafone reached base with a double. Vradenburg drove in two runs with a double in the fourth. Mercado and Snead both had a RBI single. Shortstop Gabrielle Rivera (sr. Teaneck, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) had New Jersey City's lone hit in the fifth inning.
Righty Beth Ann Hyland (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) was the winner in the second contest. In four innings, she (7-4) allowed two hits and one run. Nolan pitched the fifth inning. Left-hander Ashley Latushko (jr. Kearny, NJ/Kearny) took the loss.
The Profs totaled 11 hits, two doubles and two home runs. Snead went three for three with two RBIs and a double. She scored four runs. Third baseman Amanda Toomer (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and Arcella posted two hits apiece. Romero had a double and two RBIs. Mercado added one RBI. Arcella scored two runs while Toomer and Mercado had one apiece. DeYoung registered her second homer on the day and her ninth on the season.
The Profs had a 4-0 lead after one run in the first inning and three in the second. Snead scored the first run on DeYoung's sacrifice fly. In the second, Mercado posted a sacrifice fly that brought home Toomer. Romero plated Snead and Arcella with a double. NJCU had a solo home run by Setar in the bottom of the second.
Rowan was up 7-1 after Snead registered a three-run homer in the third inning. DeYoung smashed a grand slam in the top of the fifth. Snead, Arcella and Romero all scored on the home run.
