Box Score 2 Highlight Video 1 Highlight Video 2GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split a conference doubleheader against Kean University on Thursday afternoon. The Profs won the first game, 2-0 and the Cougars took the second, 1-0.
In the opener, designated player Ashley DeYoung (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) recorded a two-run homer in the sixth inning for the Rowan victory. It was her seventh home run on the season. She knocked in left fielder Jennifer Arcella (sr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) who got on base with a double to right field.
Right-hander Krysti Maronski (sr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) registered her fourth shutout on the season. She (8-3) scattered four hits and struck out 11 batters. At the plate, Maronski had one hit in one at bat. Righty Courtney Yard (jr. Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central) took the loss. She (8-3) gave up four hits and had five strikeouts.
For Kean, right fielder Megan Cegielski (sr. Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and center fielder Sandra Binkiewicz (sr. Belleville, NJ/Belleville) each contributed with two hits (three at bats).
The Cougars scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning in the nightcap. Catcher Jill Martin (sr. Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) drove in designated player Emily Bissonnette (fr. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) with a double to left field. Bissonnette led off with a single up the middle and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Amanda Berezny (fr. Washington, NJ/Warren Hills).
Kean has a 16-4 record with a 3-1 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Rowan is 14-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Right-hander Rebecca Rotola (jr. Linden, NJ/Linden) registered her eighth win on the mound. She (8-1) only allowed two hits. Righty Beth Ann Hyland (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) threw 6.2 innings in the loss (6-4).
Cegielski went three for four and second baseman Emily Sabo (fr. Rahway, NJ/Rahway) produced two hits (three at bats). Arcella tallied a double in three at bats.
Rowan travels to New Jersey City University on Saturday, April 5 for a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader.
