Softball Splits Doubleheader At Montclair State University

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at Montclair State University on Saturday.  The Red Hawks won the first game, 1-0 and the Profs came back to take the second, 5-0.
 
It was the last doubleheader of the regular season for both teams.  Montclair State is 34-4 overall and Rowan has a 30-9 record.  In the conference, the Red Hawks finished 15-3 and the Profs were 14-4.  Rowan is the third seed in the NJAC Championship Tournament and will host the fourth seed Kean University (29-9) in the first round on Tuesday, April 29 at 4 p.m.   
 
In the opener, Montclair State scored the winning run in the third inning.  Right fielder Lauren Guillen (fr. Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) and left fielder Brooke Powers (so. Newton, NJ/Pope John XXIII) hit back-to-back singles.  Catcher Alisha Cumberton (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) moved the runners one base with a sacrifice bunt.  Third baseman Dana Amato (sr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) singled to left field, scoring Guillen.
 
Amato ended the game with two hits in three at bats.  For Rowan, shortstop Shilah Snead (so. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) contributed with a base hit and pitcher Krysti Maronski (sr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) and left fielder Jennifer Arcella (sr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) each produced a double.
 
Right-hander Alex Hill (sr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) only gave up three hits for the win.  She (23-2) struck out 10 batters and was one for two at the plate.  Maronski (18-3) had the loss.  She allowed one run on five hits and had eight strikeouts.
 
Right-handed pitcher Beth Ann Hyland (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) earned the win in the nightcap.  In five innings, she (13-5) only allowed one hit and had eight strikeouts.  Maronski threw two hitless innings in relief.  Righty Alison Cullen (sr. Branchburg, NJ/Immaculata) had the loss on the mound.  She (11-2) gave up three runs, two earned and seven hits.
 
Snead was three for four with two RBIs, one double, a home run and three runs scored.  Arcella registered three hits (four at bats), a double, two RBIs and one run scored.  Second baseman Alysa Romero (jr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) chipped in with a double and one RBI.  Right fielder Sammy Vradenburg (fr. Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) crossed the plate one time.
 
The Profs led 2-0 after the second inning.  Vradenburg reached base on a fielder's choice.  Snead plated Vradenburg with a double to center field.  Arcella drove in Snead with a single.  In the fourth, Snead recorded a solo homer to left center.  It was her seventh home run on the year.  The Profs added two insurance runs in the sixth inning.  Arcella posted a RBI double and she scored on a double by Romero.
