Box Score 2 NEWARK, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won 2-1 and 13-3 at Rutgers-Newark in a conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
Right-hander Krysti Maronski (sr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester Institute of Technology) was the winning pitcher in the opener. She (16-3) only allowed two hits and one run. Maronski struck out nine batters. Lefty Brianna Alicchio (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) took the loss on the mound. She (4-6) gave up two runs, one earned on seven hits.
Second baseman Alysa Romero (jr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) and center fielder Shannon Costello (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) each had one RBI. First baseman Damariz Mercado (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) was two for three at the plate. Shortstop Shilah Snead (so. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and Romero each scored a run. Third baseman Amanda Toomer (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) produced a double.
For the Scarlet Raiders, catcher Gabby Spinella (sr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) had a RBI and designated player Toniann Donde (jr. Shirley, NY/William Floyd) scored one run. Third baseman Anna Carlson (fr. Jefferson, NJ/Jefferson) registered a double.
The Profs recorded the winning run in the sixth inning. Romero reached on a two-base error. She went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Maronski. Costello drove in Romero with a single through the left side.
Both teams scored in the first inning. Snead led off with a single up the middle and she went to second on a base hit by left fielder Jennifer Arcella (sr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley). Designated player Ashley DeYoung (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) flied out to left field and Snead and Arcella each advanced a base. Romero had a sac bunt on the first base side, which scored Snead. In the bottom half, Donde got on base with a walk and she moved to third on Carlson's double. Donde came home on a ground out by Spinella.
In the night cap, right-handed pitcher Beth Ann Hyland (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) threw four innings for the victory. She (11-5) scattered six hits and gave up three runs, one earned. Righty Allison Nolan (so. Red Bank, NJ/Middletown S.) ended the game with three hitless innings. Pitcher Katie Boyd (fr. Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) had the loss. Rowan has an overall record of 27-8 with an 11-3 conference mark. Rutgers-Newark is 12-22 on the season and 1-13 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Arcella totaled four hits in five at bats, a double, four RBIs and four runs scored. DeYoung contributed with two hits and three RBIs. Romero went three for five with three RBIs. Mercado compiled four hits (five at bats), two doubles, one RBI and two runs scored. Catcher Meagan Lee (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), right fielder Dana Cafone (so. Galloway, NJ/Absegami), right fielder Sara Finnegan (fr. South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) and Romero all scored one run.
Rowan was up 5-0 after scoring one run in the first inning and four in the second. Romero had a RBI single in the first. Cafone crossed the plate on an error and Arcella drove in two runs with a single to right center in the second inning. DeYoung plated Arcella with a base hit.
In the fourth, Rowan led 6-0 after a RBI single by DeYoung. Rutgers-Newark scored all three of its runs in the bottom half. Pinch runner Roniqua Cureton (fr. Newark, NJ/East Side) came home on an error. Pitcher Jess Cannon (so. Newton, NJ/Newton) had a sacrifice fly and second baseman Vannessa Romero (so. Garfield, NJ/St. Mary) scored on a fielder's choice.
The Profs were ahead 8-3 after two runs in the fifth inning. Arcella doubled home Finnegan and DeYoung had a sac fly, scoring Snead. Rowan tacked on five more runs in the seventh. Arcella had a RBI single and Alysa Romero knocked in two runs with a base hit up the middle. Lee and Mercado both singled in a run.
