Box Score 2 Highlight Video 1 Highlight Video 2GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept The College of New Jersey, 3-1 and 2-1 in nine innings in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader on Thursday.
Right-hander Krysti Maronski (sr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester Institute of Technology) registered the win in the first game. She (14-3) only gave up two hits and one run while striking out six batters. Righty Alex Carisone (sr. Branchburg, NJ/Rutgers Prep) had the loss. She (1-7) allowed three runs on nine hits.
Shortstop Shilah Snead (so. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and second baseman Alysa Romero (jr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) each produced two doubles and one RBI. Designated player Ashley DeYoung (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) contributed with one hit and one RBI. Catcher Meagan Lee (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) tallied a double. Right fielder Dana Cafone (so. Galloway, NJ/Absegami), first baseman Damariz Mercado (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) and Snead all scored one run.
Rowan scored two runs in the first inning. Snead led off with a double down the left field line and scored on DeYoung's single. Cafone pinch ran for DeYoung. Romero had a double up the middle and Cafone came home. Snead made the score 3-0 with a RBI double in the fourth inning. The Lions' run was a homer by third baseman Jessica Kennick (fr. Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) in the top of the seventh.
In the nightcap, left fielder Jennifer Arcella (sr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) drove in both of the Profs' runs with a single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth inning. She scored Lee who was placed on second because of the international tie-breaker rule and Cafone who had a walk.
In the Lions' ninth, left fielder Christine Desiderio (so. Babylon, NY/Babylon) was put on second. She advanced to third on a sac bunt by second baseman Colleen Phelan (fr. Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Reg.). Catcher Jamie Purcell (so. Nutley, NJ/Mount Saint Dominic Academy) plated Desiderio with a single to left field.
Maronski recorded her second victory on the day. She (15-3) scattered four hits in nine innings and had 13 strikeouts. Left-hander Ashtin Helmer (so. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) took the loss. She (3-10) only allowed four hits and struck out 11 batters.
Rowan travels to Rutgers-Newark on Friday, April 18 for a 2 p.m. conference doubleheader.
