Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Washington College (MD)

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split a doubleheader against Washington College (MD) on Thursday afternoon.  The Profs won the opener, 8-1 and the Shorewomen took the nightcap, 3-2.
 
In the first game, right-hander Krysti Maronski (sr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) was the winning pitcher.  She (11-3) threw a complete game and only allowed three hits and struck out 11 batters.  Righty Kristin Cooper (jr. Georgetown, DE/Sussex Central) had the loss.  In four innings, she (9-3) gave up eight runs on nine hits. 
 
Second baseman Alysa Romero (jr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) led the Profs with three hits (four at bats), a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored.  Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (sr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley), center fielder Shannon Costello (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) and Maronski each contributed with two hits.  Arcella registered a double and scored two runs.  Costello produced two RBIs. 
 
Catcher Meagan Lee (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), designated player Ashley DeYoung (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills), right fielder Dana Cafone (so. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) and Maronski all scored one run.  Washington had base hits from center fielder Paige Briganti (so. Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and first baseman Lauren Dockrill (sr. San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) while Cooper tallied a double.
 
In the third inning, Rowan got on the scoreboard with a three run homer by Romero.  It was her fourth home run this year.  Washington had its one run in the fourth.  Third baseman Caitlyn Kirby (fr. Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) walked with the bases loaded, scoring catcher Kylie Nottingham (sr. Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur).  The Profs tacked on five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Romero singled in one run and Costello drove in two with a double.  Lee crossed the plate on a walk by pinch hitter Sara Finnegan (fr. South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick).  Snead plated Maronski with a base hit.
 
Pitcher Sydnee Schorr (so. Easton, MD/Easton) recorded the win on the mound in the second contest.  She (6-4) scattered four hits and had eight strikeouts.  Righty Beth Ann Hyland (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) suffered the loss.  She (8-5) gave up three runs on 10 hits.  The Profs are 19-8 on the season while the Shorewomen have a 20-8 record.

Dockrill was three for four with one run scored.  Shortstop Suzanne Patinella (jr. Fallston, MD/Maryvale Prep), left fielder Clare Hofstedt (so. Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and Nottingham produced two hits apiece.  Cooper, Patinella and Kirby each had one RBI.  Dockrill, Nottingham and Cooper all scored one run.
 
Costello produced a double and two RBIs.  Arcella had a double and scored one run.  Shortstop Shilah Snead (so. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) collected two hits, one double and two stolen bases.  Romero scored one run.
 
The Shorewomen jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Nottingham scored the first run on an error.  Patinella singled home Dockrill and Cooper crossed the plate on a sac bunt by Kirby.  The Profs' two runs came in the sixth.  Costello drove in Arcella and Romero with a double to center field.   
   
Rowan is home again on Saturday, April 12 against conference opponent Ramapo College at 1 p.m.
