Box Score 2 WAYNE, NJ – The William Paterson University softball team edged visiting Rowan University, 3-2 and 4-3 in eight innings on Tuesday. It was the first New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader for both teams.
William Paterson center fielder Kelsey Principe (jr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) drove in the tying and winning runs with a double in the fifth inning of the first contest. She also had two walks and scored one run.
Right-hander Gabrielle Castelli (fr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) was the winning pitcher in relief. She (5-0) threw 3.2 innings and only gave up two hits. Righty Krysti Maronski (sr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) had the loss. She (7-3) allowed three hits and three runs, two earned.
Right fielder Nicole Fryer (fr. East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg S.) contributed with one hit and one run scored. Catcher Lachelle Rouse (jr. Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) scored one run and first baseman Melissa Swain (jr. West Berlin, NJ/Paul VI) added a hit.
For Rowan, catcher Meagan Lee (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) was one for three with one RBI. Center fielder Shannon Costello (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and pinch runner Sammy Vradenburg (fr. Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) each scored a run.
The Pioneers had a 1-0 lead after the first inning. With two outs, Principe walked, stole second and scored on an error. The Profs went up 2-1 in the fourth. Designated player Ashley DeYoung (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) walked and was replaced by Vradenburg. Costello and third baseman Jess Phillips (jr. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) followed with walks, which loaded the bases. Lee hit a single through the left side, scoring Vradenburg. Costello crossed the plate on a passed ball.
Rouse walked in the fifth and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Rachel Wasilak (fr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston). Fryer reached base on a fielder's choice. Rouse and Fryer scored on Principe's double to left center field.
In the night cap, second baseman Christina Austin (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) produced the game-winning RBI. She had a single to center field that scored Principe in the eighth inning. William Paterson has a 12-2 record while Rowan is 13-6 overall.
Castelli registered her second win of the day on the mound. She (6-0) pitched three hitless innings and had four strikeouts. Right-hander Beth Ann Hyland (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) took the loss.
Austin ended the game with two hits (three at bats) and three RBIs. Left fielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (so. Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) was two for three with one run scored. Principe scored two runs while shortstop Katelyn Miele (sr. Flanders, NJ/John Pope XXIII) chipped in with a double and one run scored.
DeYoung posted three hits in three at bats, a home run and two RBIs. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) tallied a double and scored one run. Shortstop Shilah Snead (so. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) had one hit and one run scored.
William Paterson scored one run in the second with a RBI single by designated player Keanna Ross (jr. Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook). Rowan took a 3-1 lead in the third inning. Arcella plated Snead with a double to left center field. DeYoung recorded a two run homer that scored Arcella. It was DeYoung's sixth home run on the season. The Pioneers tied the score in the bottom half on Austin's two RBI single to left field.
