Softball Falls To Christopher Newport, 4-2 And Western Connecticut, 3-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Rowan University softball team lost to host Christopher Newport University, 4-2 and Western Connecticut State University, 3-2 on Sunday.

Right-hander Krista Lewis was the Captains' winning pitcher.  She (2-1) gave up three hits and two earned runs.  Righty Krysti Maronski (sr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester County of Institute of Technology) took the loss.  She (1-1) allowed nine hits and four runs, two earned.

Shortstop Candice Zollars led Christopher Newport (4-3) with three hits (four at bats) and one RBI.  Catcher Karlee Holzbach contributed with two hits in three at bats, one RBI and one run scored.  Second baseman Tori Clarke chipped in with two hits and scored one run.  Third baseman Alexis Pope and left fielder Rachael Shiflett each had one hit and one run scored.

Both of the Profs' runs came on home runs.  Second baseman Alysa Romero (jr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) and right fielder Damariz Mercado (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) each recorded a solo shot.

The Captains scored two runs in the second inning.  Pope came home on an error and Zollars had a RBI single that scored Holzbach.  Christopher Newport had a 4-0 lead with one run in the fourth and fifth innings.  Shiflett stole home in the fourth while Holzbach knocked in Clarke with a base hit in the fifth.  Rowan's home runs by Mercado and Romero came in the sixth inning.

Left fielder Michaela Roche hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game for Western Connecticut (1-2).  Right-hander Alle Sabith registered the win on the mound.  She (1-1) gave up three hits and two earned runs.  Righty Beth Ann Hyland (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) had the loss.  She (0-2) allowed five hits and three runs, one was earned.

For the Colonials, pinch hitter Kylie Boyle contributed with one RBI.  Pinch runner Alexandra LaFemina and right fielder Brittany Virgulto each scored one run.  Rowan third baseman Brigette Alessandrini (fr. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) was one for three with two RBIs.  Center fielder Shannon Costello (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) had one hit in three at bats and one run scored.  Pinch runner Sammy Vradenburg (fr. Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) scored one run. 

Each teams produced two runs in the second inning.  In the top half, Alessandrini drove in Vradenburg and Costello with a single.  LaFemina scored the Colonials' first run on an error.  Virgulto crossed the plate on Boyle's ground out.  Rocha led off the seventh with the winning home run to right field.  The Profs are 1-3 on the season.
