Box Score 2 CLERMONT, FL – The Rowan University softball team won its first two games at the Dot Richardson Spring Games on Friday. The Profs defeated Juniata College, 5-1 and Transylvania University, 1-0.
Right-hander Beth Ann Hyland (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) was the winning pitcher versus Juniata. Hyland (1-2) only allowed one hit and one earned run. She struck out nine batters. Lydia Gorba took the loss on the mound. In three innings, she (0-3) gave up four hits and four runs, three earned.
Right fielder Dana Cafone (so. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) led Rowan with two hits (three at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Second baseman Alysa Romero (jr. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) contributed with a double and scored one run. Catcher Meagan Lee (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) went one for two at the plate with one run scored. Center fielder Shannon Costello (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) added one hit (one at bat) and one run scored.
Gorba had the Eagles' only hit in two at bats. Juniata scored its lone run in the top of the first inning. Center fielder Katie Schroeder reached base on a walk and later came home on a wild pitch. Rowan tied the score in the bottom of the second. Cafone knocked in Lee with a single down the left field line.
The Profs went ahead 2-1 in the third inning. Romero recorded a double then scored because of an error. Rowan produced three more runs in the fourth. Pinch runner Sammy Vradenburg (fr. Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Cafone had a RBI single and she scored on shortstop Shilah Snead's (so. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) sacrifice fly.
Against Transylvania, righty Krysti Maronski (sr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) recorded the shutout. She (2-1) only gave up one hit and had six strikeouts. Katie Hulsman was the losing pitcher. She scattered seven hits and allowed one earned run.
For the Profs, designated player Ashley DeYoung (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) was two for three at the plate. First baseman Damariz Mercado (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield), Lee, Costello and Cafone all had one hit.
Vradenburg scored the winning run in the top of the fourth inning. DeYoung led off with a single up the middle and was replaced by Vrandenburg who advanced to second on Lee's ground out. Costello had a base hit and was caught stealing while Vrandenburg went home.
On Saturday, Rowan (3-3) plays Carroll University at 5 p.m. and the University of Wisconsin-Stout at 7 p.m.
