GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team plays its final two games of the semester in St. Petersburg, FL at the St. Pete Classic on Friday and Saturday, December 19 and 20.
The event is hosted by Eckerd College. The Profs face Berry College (GA) on Friday at 5 p.m. and Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Rowan is 8-1 overall and off to its best start since the 2003-04 season. The Profs' leading scorer is guard
Anyssa Sanchez (so. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) who is averaging 12.8 points per game (ppg). Guard
Bria Hill (sr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) is adding 8.6 ppg. Center
Kate Matthews (jr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) is grabbing a team-high 6.7 rebounds per contest and scoring 8.2 ppg.
Guards
Valerie Garofalo (so. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit),
Kaitlin Schullstrom (jr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) and
Jade Bonder (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) are also contributing to the Profs success. Garofalo is scoring 8.0 ppg and has recorded 17 steals and 16 assists. Schullstrom is tied for the team-lead with 21 assists and is registering 7.8 ppg. Bonder chips in with 7.2 points per contest and has 19 assists. Forwards
Summer Crilley (fr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) and
Melissa Lake (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and guard
Ashanti Bishop (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) are newcomers to the squad and have played valuable minutes. Crilley has recorded 6.4 ppg, Lake, 6.3 points and Bishop, 5.2 points.
Berry has a mark of 7-2. The Vikings have four players scoring in double figures and they are led by forward/center Emma Cook (so. Canton, GA/Creekview) at 17.1 ppg. She is also the team's top rebounder with 7.8 per game. Guard Chanlir Segarra (sr. Cooper City, FL/Cooper City) is adding 15.4 ppg. Guards Zarriah Pierce (fr. Chesapeake, VA/Hillgrove) and Mel McLean (sr. Cave Spring, GA/Coosa) are chipping in with 13.7 and 12.9 ppg respectively.
Wisconsin Lutheran enters the classic with a record of 4-3. Center Kristen Schulz (sr. Safford, AZ/Arizona Lutheran) is scoring a team-high 20.3 ppg and grabbing a team-best 14.6 rebounds per game. Forward Maggie Gartner (sr. Springdale, AR/Har-Ber) is averaging 9.7 points per contest, while guard/forward Taylor Bahr (jr. Racine, WI/Shoreland Lutheran) has produced 8.5 ppg.
The classic also includes Wells College, Carthage College and Messiah College. On December 19, Wisconsin-Lutheran plays Wells at 1 p.m followed by Carthage versus Messiah at 3 p.m. On December 20, Messiah faces Berry at noon and Wells meets Carthage at 8 p.m. Host Eckerd takes on LIU Post on Saturday at 3 p.m.
