Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's volleyball team won over Kean University, 3-2 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match on Tuesday night.
The set scores were 25-16, 22-25, 25-18, 15-25 and 15-9. The Profs are 13-13 overall and they complete NJAC play with a record of 6-2. The Cougars are 13-14 and they are 5-2 in the conference. The victory clinches a second place finish in the conference for Rowan and a first round bye in the NJAC Championship Tournament.
Middle hitter
Morgan Mende (jr. Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) led the Profs with 17 kills, a .483 hitting percentage and five blocks. Outside hitter
Danielle Havlicek (jr. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) added 11 kills. Setter
Mary-Grace Testa (fr. Kearny, NJ/Mount Saint Dominic Academy) collected 22 assists, seven digs and six kills. Setter
Rebecca Dantonio (so. Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) registered 20 assists and eight digs. Libero
Jennifer Vorel (so. Madison, NJ/Madison) and outside hitter
Erica O'Hagan (so. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) each had nine digs. O'Hagan also had seven kills.
For Kean, outside hitter Kassie Hernandez (so. San Diego, CA/LaCosta Canyon) recorded 15 kills, seven digs and four blocks. Outside hitter Aysia Peterson (sr. Scotch Plains-Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) tallied 14 kills, while setter Alana Aranjo (sr. Newark, NJ/Science Park) had 33 assists, six kills and six digs. Defensive specialist Lisa DeGroot (jr. Laguna Beach, CA/Capistrano Valley) produced 18 digs.
In the deciding set, the scored was knotted at three. Rowan then produced 10 of the next 12 points for a 13-5 advantage. Havlicek produced two kills during the run. Havlicek ended the match with another kill.
Rowan went out to a 7-1 lead in the first set. A kill by Peterson cut the deficit to 9-4 then the Profs scored four straight for a 13-4 advantage. Rowan led by as many as 10 points (18-8) and won the first set.
The second set was tied six times. With the scored knotted at eight, Kean went on 5-2 run for a 13-10 lead. Outside hitter Calli Scheuermann (fr. Keniworth, NJ/Roselle Catholic) had two kills, while Aranjo and Hernandez each had one during the spurt. The Profs trailed 15-13 then scored four straight, that included two kills by Mende and a Havlicek service ace, to go ahead 17-15. Aranjo tied the set at 20 on a kill. It was then tied by a Mende kill at 22. Kean scored the final three points to win the set.
In the third set, the score was tied four times, including at 12. Rowan then recorded four consecutive points for a 16-12 lead. The Profs continued to maintain the advantage and won the set.
The Cougars went out to a 10-4 lead in the fourth set and never looked back. Rowan could only get to within six for the remainder of the set.
Rowan hosts Widener University on Friday, October 24 at 7 p.m.
