Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men's basketball team lost to Rutgers-Newark, 81-65 Saturday afternoon in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) matchup.
The Scarlet Raiders improve to 11-5 overall with a 7-2 conference record. Guard John Snow (jr. Newark, NJ/Montclair Kimberley) registered a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Jordan McDaniel (so. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) scored 16 points and guard Doze Ikwuegbu (jr. Union, NJ/Union) chipped in with 13 points. Guard Christian Garcia (jr. Freehold, NJ/Freehold) and forward David Azoroh (so. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) had nine and eight points respectively. Guard Rahim Bunch (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) tallied seven rebounds.
The Profs drop to 7-9 with a 2-7 NJAC mark. Guard Kris O'Connor (so. Mount Laurel, NJ/Paul VI) scored a team-high 19 points. Guards Jason Rosenberg (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley), Rich McNamara (sr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) and Tim McDaniels (sr. Mount Holly, NJ/Lenape) recorded 17, 12 and 10 points respectively. McNamara had eight rebounds and O'Connor had six. Forward Jason Sofman (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) blocked four shots.
The score was tied at six with 14:04 remaining in the first half. The Scarlet Raiders went on a 9-2 run to go up by seven (15-8). Azoroh made a layup (13:35), guard Darrian Collins (fr. South River, NJ/St. Patrick's) hit a jumper (13:07), forward Allen Kuiper (jr. Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) sank two free throws (11:48) and Snow drilled a three-pointer (11:16). Rosenberg made a jump shot to cut the Rowan deficit to three (17-14) at 9:57. Rutgers-Newark had a 11-4 spurt to lead by 10 (28-18) with 7:04 left. Ikwuegbu had five points and guard Chris Foreman (jr. Union, NJ/Union) and McDaniel each had three points. The Profs tied the score at 31 on McDaniels' jumper with 1:08 on the clock. Collins ended the scoring with two foul shots and the Scarlet Raiders led 33-31 at halftime. Rosenberg was the leading scorer with 10 points. Ikwuegbu had six for Rutgers-Newark.
The Scarlet Raiders began the second stanza with a 10-0 run in 4:11 to lead by 12 (43-31). Snow had six points and Ikwuegbu and Azoroh both contributed two. O'Connor made a layup to trail by four (50-46) with 11:54 remaining. Rutgers-Newark had a 18-7 spurt to lead by 15 (68-53) with 6:08 on the clock. The Scarlet Raiders had their largest lead at 18 after two free throws by Collins with 46 seconds left. McNamara ended the scoring with a layup at the 0:31 mark. Snow led all scorers in the second half with 15 points and McDaniel had 11. O'Connor tallied 13 points for Rowan.
Rowan will host conference opponent Montclair State University Wednesday, January 22 at 8 p.m.
