Kean Softball Defeats The College of New Jersey, 7-2

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Kean University softball team defeated The College of New Jersey, 7-2 in eight innings in the third round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament on Saturday. 

The sixth seed Kean (26-16-1) plays the top seed Rowan University (37-6) at 3:30 p.m. in the last game on Saturday.  The winner advances to the final round on Sunday and meets the second seed Montclair State University at 11 a.m.  TCNJ (27-12) was the third seed in the conference tournament

Rowan is the host for the NJAC Championship Tournament that ends on Sunday, May 5.  Tickets are: $5 for adults and $2 for students with ID, senior citizens and children.  The conference champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

TCNJ tied the score at two with one run in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Center fielder Liz Huttner (sr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) scored on a passed ball.  Kean had five runs in the top of the eighth.  Right fielder Megan Cegielski (jr. Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central) knocked in two runs with a double.  Pitcher Courtney Yard (so. Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central) had a RBI double that scored Cegielski.  Third baseman Courtney Melchionna (sr. Linden, NJ/Linden) and designated player Casey Glatts (fr. Aston, PA/Archmere Academy) each contributed with a RBI base hit.

Yard was the winning pitcher (17-12).  She scattered seven hits and allowed two runs, one earned.  Yard struck out six batters.  Right-hander Alex Carisone (jr. Branchburg, NJ/Rutgers Prep) took the loss.  In 2.2 innings, she (5-4) gave up five earned runs.

Cegielski ended the game with two hits (five at bats), a double, two RBIs and one run scored.  Yard had a double and two RBIs and one run scored.  Second baseman Katie Schuh (sr. Mount Hollly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) contributed with three hits, one RBI and two runs scored.  Melchionna had two hits, a double and one RBI.  Glatts was two for  five with one RBI and one run scored. 

For the Lions, Huttner registered two hits in three at bats and scored two runs.  Left fielder Lindsey Williams (jr. Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) produced one hit and one RBI.  Third baseman Kelly Hommen (sr. Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) had a double.
