GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team lost to Montclair State University, 2-0 in the third round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament on Saturday.
Rowan, the top seed, (37-6) will play the winner of the sixth seed Kean University and the third seed The College of New Jersey on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Red Hawks advance to the championship on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Rowan is the host for the NJAC Championship Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5. Tickets are: $5 for adults and $2 for students with ID, senior citizens and children. The conference champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
Right-hander Alex Hill (jr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) recorded 14 strikeouts in the victory. She (32-3) only allowed three hits. Righty LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) took the loss. She (21-3) went 4.2 innings and gave up two earned runs.
Left fielder Kelli O’Brien (sr. Edison, NJ/Edison) and shortstop Jaclyn Allegretta (fr. Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) each contributed with one hit and one RBI. Pinch runners Caroline Murphy (so. Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) and Chantall Whittick (sr. East Orange, NJ/Immaculate Conception) scored one run apiece.
The Red Hawks registered one run in the third and fifth innings. In the third, designated player Melany Zeller (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) led off with a single and was replaced by Whittick. O’Brien’s sac bunt moved Whittick to second. Allegretta singled down the left field line, scoring Whittick. Hill reached first with a base hit in the fifth. Murphy replaced Hill and advanced to second on Zeller’s sacrifice bunt. O’Brien singled to left center and Murphy crossed the plate.
