GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team defeated Richard Stockton College, 6-3 in the second round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament on Friday.
Rowan, the top seed, (37-5) faces the second seed Montclair State University (39-3) on Saturday at 10 a.m. The sixth seed Kean University (25-16-1) plays the third seed The College of New Jersey (26-13) at noon. In the first game on Friday, Kean won 5-1 over the fifth seed William Paterson. The Ospreys (30-11) and the Pioneers (19-21) were eliminated from the tournament.
Rowan is the host for the NJAC Championship Tournament that continues on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5. Tickets are: $5 for adults and $2 for students with ID, senior citizens and children. The conference champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) picked up her second win on the mound in the conference tournament. She (21-2) gave up three earned runs and had six strikeouts. Michelle Pietrocola (jr. North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) was the losing pitcher. She (15-6) allowed four hits and four earned runs.
Second baseman Alyssa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) was two for three with a home run and two RBIs. First baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) and right fielder Dana Cafone (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) each had a home run. Labas has 12 home runs on the season, which broke the school record (11) that she set last year. Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) contributed with one hit, one RBI and one run scored. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) chipped in with a triple and one RBI.
For Richard Stockton, designated player Arielle Cooke (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) went two for three with a home run and three RBIs. Left fielder Nichole Terreri (sr. Deptford, NJ/Deptford) produced three hits in four at bats and scored one run. Catcher Nicole Scanlon (jr. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) registered two hits (three at bats) and one run scored.
In the first inning, Labas had a home run to left center for a 1-0 lead. Rowan went up 5-0 with four runs in the second. Romero had a two-run homer to left center. Cafone’s home run went to left field. Arcella knocked in Snead with a triple.
All three of Stockton’s runs came in the bottom of the fifth. Terreri led off with a single and Scanlon followed with a base hit. Cooke then homered to center field. The Profs had a RBI single by Snead in the seventh inning for the final run.
