LA CROSSE, WI - The Rowan University women’s track & field team competed on the first day of the NCAA Division III Championships on Thursday.  The national championships continue on Friday-Saturday, May 24-25 at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Roger Harring Stadium.

The 4x100 meter relay with Shailah Williams (fr. Pemberton, NJ/Pemberton Twp.), Jamie Thompson (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick), Shantel Beckford (so. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and Brianna Crofton (so. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) won heat two and advanced to Saturday’s final at 3:30 p.m.  The Profs ran a school record time of 47.13.  Their previous mark was 47.48 when they won the 2013 New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship.  Rowan has the third best time among the nine schools that qualified for the championship race.  Wis.-La Crosse took first in heat one in 45.97 followed by Buffalo State College with a time of 46.30.

The 4x400 meter relay came in second in heat one of the prelims with a time of 3:45.24.  The relay with Crofton, Joyce Perry (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick), Williams and Melirah Searcy (so. Edison, NJ/Edison) will compete in the final on Saturday at 7:20 p.m.  The Profs improved on their school record (3:48.86) when they took first place at the conference championships.  Rowan had the third best time in the prelims behind Wis.-La Crosse (3:44.34) and Illinois Wesleyan (3:48.86).

Williams just missed advancing to the final in the 200 meters.  She finished 11th in the prelims in 24.59.  There was a tie for the ninth qualifying spot between Mount Union’s Mary Mahoney and Wis.-River Falls’ Alyssa Rasmussen.  Both runners ran 24.58 in the prelims.

Thompson took 10th in the long jump with a leap of 18’ 7” (5.66 meters).  Searcy qualified for the 400 meter hurdles for the second straight year.  She came in 10th in the prelims with a time of 1:01.88.
