SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Rowan University women’s track and field team broke three school records on the first day of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships on Thursday. The two-day championships at Springfield College continue on Friday at 11 a.m.
The 4x400 meter relay ran a winning time of 3:48.86, which was a University record. The previous school mark was 3:49.70 from earlier this season. The relay included Brianna Crofton (so. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.), Joyce Perry (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick), Shailah Williams (fr. Pemberton, NJ/Pemberton Twp.) and Melirah Searcy (so. Edison, NJ/Edison).
Williams took third in the 100 meter trials and qualified for the 1:55 p.m. final on Friday. She ran 12.02 that broke the record (12.04) that was held by Marketa Morse (1995).
Jewel Brown (fr. Clayton, NJ/Clayton) finished sixth in the triple jump with 38’ 4” (11.68 meters). She surpassed the previous mark held by Shantel Beckford (so. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) that was 37’ 5.75” (11.42 meters). Beckford came in seventh with 38’ (11.58 meters). She was 13th (12.29) in the trials of the 100 meters.
Jamie Thompson (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) had a third place (14.43) in the 100 meter hurdles trials. She will compete in Friday’s final at 1:10 p.m.
Christin Bettis (fr. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) came in seventh (11:39.75) in the 3000 meters steeplechase. In the javelin, Melissa Lake (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) finished eighth with a toss of 127’ 5” (38.83 meters) and Sarah Dores (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Holy Cross) was 11th (121’ 6”, 37.04 meters).
Jessica Carlson (jr. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) finished 16th (15.08) in the 100 meter hurdles trials. Emily Spieker (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) came in 19th in the hammer with a throw of 141’ 3” (43.06 meters).
