Softball Falls To Tufts University, 4-1 In Region Final Round

BABSON PARK, MA – The Rowan University softball team lost to Tufts University, 4-1 in the final round of the NCAA Regional on Monday. 

The Profs end the season with a 41-9 record, which tied the school record for wins in a season.  They were seeded second in the regional while the Jumbos were the top seed.  Tufts (42-3) advances to the national championship that is slated for Friday-Tuesday, May 17-21  at Carson Park in Eau Claire, WI.

Right-hander Allyson Fournier was the winning pitcher.  She (21-1) totaled 14 strikeouts and only gave up two hits and one earned run.  Fournier was selected the Most Outstanding Player of the regional.  Righty Krysti Maronski (jr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/GCIT) took the loss.  She (14-3) allowed five hits and four earned runs.

Left fielder Bri Keenan led Tufts with two hits (three at bats), two RBIs and one run scored.  Shortstop Emily Beinecke was two for two with one RBI and one run scored.  Second baseman Gracie Marshall added one hit and one RBI.  Catcher Jo Clair and third baseman Christina Raso each had one hit and scored one run.  Keenan, Beinecke, Marshall and Clair were members of the All-Region Team which also included right fielder Sara Hedtler.

For Rowan, second baseman Alysa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) recorded a home run in the fifth inning.  It was her second homer in the regional and eighth on the year.  She was named to the All-Region team along left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley), pitcher LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland), shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and Maronski.   

The Jumbos scored all four runs in the bottom of the third.  Beinecke had a RBI single, scoring Raso.  Keenan knocked in Clair and Beinecke with a base hit through the right side.  Marshall drove in Keenan with a single.

Rowan received an at-large bid to the national tournament.  This was the Profs’ 21st appearance and third straight in the NCAAs.  Rowan has advanced to the national finals three times and finished fourth in 1994 and 1993.
