Softball Wins Two Games At NCAA Regional And Moves On To Final Round

BABSON PARK, MA – The Rowan University softball team won two games in the NCAA Regional on Sunday.  Rowan defeated Springfield College, 5-0 and Babson College, 2-1.  The Profs move on to the final round on Monday.

Rowan (41-8), the second seed plays the top seed Tufts University (41-3) at 10 a.m.  The Profs have one loss in the double elimination tournament and will have to win two games against the Jumbos for the region title.  The winner advances to the national championship that is scheduled for Friday-Tuesday, May 17-21  at Carson Park in Eau Claire, WI.

Second baseman Alysa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) recorded the game-winning home run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the victory over Babson.  The Profs’ loss in the regional was to the Beavers, 2-0 on Saturday.  Rowan has 41 wins on the season, which tied the school record from 2006 when the softball team finished 41-7 overall.   

Romero was two for two at the plate.  She also produced a double and it was her seventh home run on the season.  Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) contributed with a double and one run scored.  First baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) registered a double.

Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) recorded the win on the mound.  She (23-4) threw 2.2 relief innings and only allowed two hits.  Left-hander Kathleen Conway took the loss.  She (22-7) gave up six hits and two earned runs.

The Profs led 1-0 after the first inning.  Snead had a walk and stole second.  With two outs, pitcher Krysti Maronski (jr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/GCIT) singled up the middle, scoring Snead.  The Beavers tied the score in the fourth.  Conway had a double and crossed the plate on a base hit by third baseman Christa Shorette.  In the top of the sixth inning, Rowan right fielder Katie Bussman (so. Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) threw out Conway at home after right fielder Lindsey Schmid singled.   

Maronski was the winning pitcher against Springfield.  She (14-2) only gave up four hits in her sixth shutout.  Maronski struck out eight batters.  Righty Ashley Marino was the losing pitcher.  In 5.2 innings, she (9-9) allowed six hits and three runs, one earned.

In the first inning, left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) had a two-run homer.  Center fielder Shannon Costello (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) reached base with a single in the sixth and later scored on an error.  She ended the game with three hits in three at bats and one RBI. 

Rowan added two more runs in the seventh.  Costello’s single up the middle scored Romero and pinch hitter Aubrey Newcomb (jr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) knocked in catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) with a base hit to right center.  Springfield’s designated player Jenna Webb had three hits in three at bats.
