Softball Stays Alive In NCAA Regional With 2-0 Win Over St. Joseph's (ME)

BABSON PARK, MA – The Rowan University softball team stayed alive in the NCAA Regional with a 2-0 win over St. Joseph’s College (ME) on Saturday afternoon.  In the morning, Rowan had its first loss, 2-0 against host Babson College in the double elimination tournament. 

Rowan (39-8), the second seed, plays the fourth seed Springfield College (28-19) on Sunday, May 12 at noon and the winner faces the third seed Babson (34-13) at 2 p.m.  The top seed Tufts University defeated Babson, 9-1 in the last game on Saturday. 

Right-hander Krysti Maronski (jr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/GCIT) had the win on the mound against St. Joseph’s.  She (13-2) scattered five hits and struck out seven batters.  Righty Kayla Vannah was the losing pitcher.  In 4.1 innings, she (11-8) gave up six hits and two earned runs.

Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) recorded a two-run homer in the fifth inning.  It was her third home run on the season.  She knocked in shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) who reached base with a single.  Snead ended the game with three hits in four at bats.  Catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) produced a double. 

For the Monks, center fielder Danyelle Shufelt and catcher Heather Tripp each had two hits in three at bats.  St. Joseph’s was the fifth seed in the regional and had a final record of 34-13.

Left-hander Kathleen Conway was the winning pitcher for Babson.  She (22-5) only allowed three hits and had seven strikeouts.  Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) took the loss.  She (22-4) allowed six hits and two earned runs.

Shortstop Catie Funk put the Beavers up 1-0 with a led off home run to left field in the fourth inning.  She reached base on a fielder’s choice in the sixth and scored on a single up the middle by left fielder Ashleigh Phelps.  Phelps totaled three hits in three at bats.  For the Profs, second baseman Alysa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland), pinch hitter Ashley DeYoung (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) and Maronski each had one hit.
