NCAA Babson Park Regional
BABSON PARK, MA – The Rowan University softball team won 1-0 over Husson University in the NCAA Regional on Friday. The Profs were scheduled to play on Thursday but their game was moved because of the rain delays.
Rowan (38-7), the second seed, meets the third seed Babson College (33-12) in the opener on Saturday at 10 a.m. Babson advanced with a 1-0 victory against the sixth seed Bridgewater State University. In the losers bracket, St. Joseph’s College (ME) eliminated Lesley University with a 4-0 shutout. Husson later knocked Bridgewater State out of the regional, 1-0. The top seed Tufts University defeated the fourth seed Springfield College, 8-2.
Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) only allowed three hits for the win over Husson. She (22-3) had five strikeouts. Righty Amanda Ryan had the loss. She (10-4) allowed six hits and one earned run.
Right fielder Katie Bussman (so. Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) contributed with a double. Pinch hitter Krysti Maronski (jr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/GCIT) was one for one at the plate and scored the winning run. Second baseman Alysa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) recorded a RBI. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley), first baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville), catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) and third baseman Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) all produced one hit.
For the Eagles, shortstop Aimee Mortensen was two for three. Designated player Kayla Merrill registered one hit.
Rowan scored in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Maronski singled up the middle and Lee followed with a walk. Maronski went to third on a wild pitch and she came home when Romero fouled out to right field.
The national softball tournament is double elimination. The regional winner advances to the national championship that is scheduled for Friday-Tuesday, May 17-21 at Carson Park in Eau Claire, WI.
Rowan received an at-large bid to the national tournament. This is the Profs’ 21st appearance and third straight in the NCAAs. Rowan has advanced to the national finals three times and finished fourth in 1994 and 1993.
