Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Richard Stockton College

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split a conference doubleheader against Richard Stockton College on Tuesday afternoon.  The Profs had a 3-0 shutout in the first game while the Ospreys took the second contest, 6-5.

The Profs are 24-4 overall and 7-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  Richard Stockton snapped Rowan’s  20-game win streak.  Richard Stockton has a 17-7 record with a 3-5 conference mark. 

Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) recorded a no-hitter in the first game.  It was her fourth shutout on the season.  She (14-2) struck out five batters.  Pitcher Michelle Pietrocola (jr. North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) had the loss.  She (8-4) threw five innings and gave up three earned runs.

Designated player Ashley DeYoung (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) led the Profs with two hits (three at bats), a double and two RBIs.  This week, she was named the NJAC Rookie of the Week.  Second baseman Alysa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) contributed with two hits (three at bats), a double and one run scored.  Center fielder Shannon Costello (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) chipped in with a double and one RBI.  Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) was one for two at the plate and had one run scored.  Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) scored one run.

In the first inning, Rowan had a RBI double by DeYoung that scored Snead.  The Profs tacked on one run in the fifth and sixth innings.  DeYoung had a single through the left side and Arcella crossed the plate in the fifth.  Costello’s double in the sixth brought home Romero who reached base with a double to left center.

In the nightcap, Brittany Ksiezopolski (so. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) was the winning pitcher and Pietrocola earned a save.  Ksiezpolski (8-3) went 5.2 innings and allowed five runs, three earned.  Reliever Beth Ann Hyland (fr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) had the loss on the mound. 

Catcher Nicole Scanlon (jr. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) led the Ospreys with a double and three RBIs.  Right fielder Rachel Forte (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) was three for three with one RBI and one run scored.  First baseman Dominique Dorris (fr. Mantua, NJ/Clearview Reg.) added two hits (three at bats) and one run scored. 

Snead went two for three with a triple, one RBI and one run scored.  Third baseman Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) posted two doubles, one RBI and one run scored.  Arcella had one hit and one RBI.  Catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) produced two hits in three at bats. 

Rowan was ahead 2-1 after the third inning.  Snead knocked in one run with a triple and came home on the throw.  Richard Stockton tied the score in the fourth when Forte had a single that scored Dorris.  In the fifth, the Ospreys took the lead with two runs.  Designated player Arielle Cooke (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) recorded a two-RBI single.  The Profs had one run in the bottom half with a RBI base hit by Arcella.  Both teams scored two runs in the sixth inning.  Scanlon drove in two runs with a double.  Romero came home on a single by right fielder Katie Bussman (so. Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan).  Phillips had a double that scored Bussman.

Rowan travels to Washington College (MD) on Thursday, April 11 for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
