Softball Shuts Out New Jersey City University, 8-0 and 6-0

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team shut out New Jersey City University, 8-0 (5 inn.) and 6-0 on Saturday afternoon.  First baseman Stephanie Labas broke the Profs’ career home run record in the first game.

Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) has six home runs this season for a career total of 26.  She shared the previous mark (25) with Nicolina Veneziano (2009-12).  Rowan, ranked 17th, is 23-3 overall and 6-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).  The Profs have a 19-game win streak.  NJCU has a 10-13 record with a 0-6 conference mark.     

Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) went three innings for the win in the opener.  Miller (13-2) only allowed two hits and had four strikeouts.  Righty Allison Nolan (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) was on the mound for the last two innings.  Right-hander Ashley O’Beirne (sr. Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) took the loss. 

Labas ended the game with three RBIs and two runs scored.  Second baseman Alysa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) contributed with a triple and two RBIs.  Designated player Ashley DeYoung (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) was two for two with a double, one RBI and one run scored.  Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) added one hit (two at bats) and two runs scored.  Catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) and third baseman Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) each chipped in with one hit and one run scored.  Center fielder Shannon Costello (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) had a double and one RBI.

Rowan led 3-0 after the first inning.  Snead came home on a ground out by Labas.  Romero’s triple, scored DeYoung and Lee.  In the third, Labas led off with a home run to right field.  Pinch runner Christina Lee (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) crossed the plate on a double by Costello.  The Profs added three more runs in the fourth inning.  Phillips scored on a fielder’s choice with Labas at bat and Snead followed home on an error.  DeYoung knocked in Labas with a double.

In the second contest, right-hander Beth Ann Hyland (fr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) earned the win in relief.  She (2-0) threw 4.1 innings and did not allow a hit.  O’Beirne was on the mound again for the Gothic Knights.

Romero led the Profs with two hits (three at bats), three RBIs and a home run.  DeYoung produced one hit, one RBI and one run scored.  Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and Labas had one hit and one run scored apiece.  Snead registered one hit, three stole bases and two runs scored. 

In the first inning, Snead reached base with a single and later went home on a passed ball.  Rowan was ahead 3-0 after two runs in the third.  Arcella got on with an error and Snead scored.  DeYoung had a base hit that brought Arcella home.  Rowan had a three-run homer by Romero in the fifth inning.  It was her third home run on the season.
 
Next week, Rowan hosts conference opponent Richard Stockton College on Tuesday, April 9 at 3 p.m.
