Softball Splits Final Conference Doubleheader With Montclair State University

GLASSBORO NJ – The Rowan University softball team split the last conference doubleheader of the regular season with Montclair State University.  The Profs had a 3-0 shutout in the first game and the Red Hawks won the second contest, 2-1 in nine innings.

Rowan is the number one seed in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament and Montclair State is second.  The Profs are 35-5 overall and the Red Hawks have a 37-3 record.  In the first round of the conference tournament, Rowan hosts the sixth seed Kean University on Tuesday, April 30 at 4 p.m.  The remainder of the NJAC Championship Tournament will be held at Rowan on Friday-Sunday, May 3-5. 

Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) recorded her ninth shutout in the opener.  Miller (19-2) only gave up four hits and she had nine strikeouts.  Righty Alex Hill (jr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) had the loss.  Hill (28-3) allowed seven hits and three runs, two earned.  She struck out 13 batters.

Designated player Ashley DeYoung (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) contributed with one hit (three at bats) and one RBI.  Second baseman Alysa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) recorded a solo home run.  Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) was two for four with a triple and one run scored.  Third baseman Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) scored one run. 

For the Red Hawks, second baseman Katie Muglia (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) registered two hits in two at bats.  Left fielder Kelli O’Brien (sr. Edison, NJ/Edison) and Hill each had one hit.

The Profs got on the scoreboard in the first inning.  Snead led off with a triple and later came home on an error.  DeYoung had single to right field in the third, scoring Phillips.  Rowan’s final run was Romero’s solo shot in the sixth inning.  It was her fifth home run on the season.

In the nightcap, Montclair State pinch runner Chantall Whittick (sr. East Orange, NJ/Immaculate Conception) scored the winning run on a wild pitch.  Hill was the winning pitcher in relief.  She (29-3) threw six hitless innings and totaled 10 strikeouts.  Right-hander Krysti Maronski (jr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/GCIT) took the loss.  She (12-2) allowed four hits and two unearned runs.

The Red Hawks’ first baseman Tara Petrucelli (so. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) was one for four with one RBI.  Center fielder Jamie Paulino (sr. Linden, NJ/Linden) scored one run. 

Right fielder Katie Bussman (so. Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) put Rowan ahead 1-0 in the third inning with a lead off home run to left field.  It was her third homer of the year.  Petrucelli’s single up the middle scored Paulino in the fourth and tied the score.
