CAMDEN, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won two conference games, 10-5 and 10-0 in five innings at Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday.
First baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) recorded a home run in each game, which tied the school record (11) for home runs in a season. She set the University mark last year. Rowan, ranked 11th, is 34-4 overall and 15-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Profs are in first place in the conference standings after William Paterson University defeated Montclair State University, 4-1. It is the second NJAC loss for the Red Hawks. Rutgers-Camden is 19-18 overall with a 2-14 NJAC mark.
In the first contest, right-hander Allison Nolan (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) was the winning pitcher in relief. She (2-0) threw 4.2 innings and only allowed three hits. Righty Ashleigh Johnson (sr. Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Reg.) had the loss. Johnson (11-8) gave up 11 hits and 10 runs, four earned.
Labas was two for four with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Designated player Ashley DeYoung (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) produced two hits (five at bats), a home run and two RBIs. Center fielder Shannon Costello (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) contributed with two hits (three at bats) and one RBI. Right fielder Katie Bussman (so. Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) collected one hit, one RBI and one run scored. Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) registered a double, one RBI and one run scored. Third baseman Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) chipped in with two RBIs. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) added one hit and scored two runs. Catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) had two hits (three at bats) and one run scored.
For Rutgers-Camden, third baseman Katie Larson (fr. Delran, NJ/Delran) and shortstop Courtney Ray (sr. Gloucester City, NJ/Miami Palmetto (FL)) each registered two hits (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Ray had one home run. First baseman Kaitlyn Gaskill (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) produced a double, one RBI and one run scored.
The Scarlet Raptors jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. The Profs started their come back with a two-run homer by DeYoung in the third. Rowan went ahead 7-5 with five runs in the fourth inning. Phillips had a sacrifice fly, scoring second baseman Alysa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland). Snead drove in one run with a double and she later crossed the plate on an error. Labas recorded a two-run home run.
Rowan added one more run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth. Phillips posted her second sacrifice fly of the game, scoring Lee in the fifth. Costello and Bussman both walked with the bases loaded in the sixth inning for a RBI.
Right-hander Krysti Maronski (jr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/GCIT) had the win in the nightcap. She (12-1) pitched three innings and only gave up one hit. Righty Beth Ann Hyland (fr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) was on the mound for the last two innings. She also only allowed one hit. Right-hander Sam Shockey (fr. Deptford, NJ/Deptford) was the losing pitcher.
Labas went two for three with a home run, three RBIs and one run scored. Arcella produced three hits (four at bats), a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. DeYoung contributed with two hits (four at bats), a double and one RBI. Romero chipped in with two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Phillips added two hits (three at bats) and scored two runs. Right fielder Dana Cafone (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) and Bussman each had a double, one RBI and one run scored.
In the first inning, Labas recorded a solo shot to center field. It was her 11th home run on the season and 31st of her career. Rowan followed with three runs in the second. Bussman had a RBI double to left center and Arcella’s single scored two runs. In the fourth inning, DeYoung had a base hit, scoring Arcella and pinch runner Christina Lee (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) came home on a single by Romero. The Profs produced four runs in the fifth and the game ended early because of the eight-run rule. Cafone knocked in Costello with a double to right center. Arcella singled in Cafone and Labas followed with a two-RBI base hit.
Rowan hosts Montclair State University on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. It is the last doubleheader of the regular season.
