GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team shut out Rutgers-Newark, 8-0 in five innings and 4-0 in a conference doubleheader on Saturday.
The Profs, ranked 11th, are 32-4 overall and 13-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Scarlet Raiders have a 7-21 record with a 2-12 conference mark.
Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) was the winning pitcher in the first game. She (18-2) only allowed three hits and had six strikeouts. Left-hander Brianna Alicchio (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) had the loss. She (2-13) gave up six earned runs.
First baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) led Rowan with two hits (three at bats) and a grand slam. Third baseman Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was three for three with three RBIs, a double and one run scored. Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) contributed with two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley), pinch hitter Amanda Toomer (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert), center fielder Shannon Costello (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) and right fielder Katie Bussman (so. Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) each added one hit and scored one run.
The Scarlet Raiders had hits by third baseman Monica Liotto (sr. Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany Hills), catcher Gabby Spinella (jr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) and first baseman Liane Drastal (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland). The Profs got on the scoreboard with a RBI single by Phillips in the second inning. Rowan scored seven runs in the fifth and the game ended earlier because of the eight run rule. Snead’s RBI single, scored Bussman. In the second contest, right-hander Allison Nolan (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) earned the win in relief. She (1-0) threw three innings and did not give up a hit. Drastal was the losing pitcher. She (5-8) gave up four runs, three earned.
Snead, Labas, Bussman and Phillips all produced two hits and one RBI. Bussman had a double and one run scored. Phillips scored one run. Costello was one for three with two runs scored. Catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) added a double. For Rutgers-Newark, first baseman Monica Bagan (sr. Wallington, NJ/Wallington) and second baseman Vannessa Romero (fr. Garfield, NJ/St. Mary) each had one hit.
In the second inning, Costello scored on a fielder’s choice with Snead at bat. Labas registered a RBI single in the fourth, scoring Phillips. Bussman knocked in Costello in the fifth inning with a double. Phillips had a sac bunt that scored Bussman.
