Softball Shuts Out William Paterson, 5-0 and 3-0

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team shut out conference opponent William Paterson University, 5-0 and 3-0 on Tuesday. 

The Profs are 19-3 overall and 4-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  The Pioneers have a 6-10 record with a 2-2 conference mark. 

Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) pitched a compete game for the shutout in the opener.  Miller (11-2) scattered eight hits and struck out 10 batters.  Righty Kerrin Dys (so. North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) took the loss.  In 2.1 innings, she (1-4) allowed four hits and three earned runs.

Designated player Ashley DeYoung (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) led Rowan with a double and three RBIs.  Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) was two for four with a double, one RBI and one run scored.  First baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) added one hit (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored.  Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) registered one hit in three at bats and scored one run.

For William Paterson, left fielder Samantha Mulderig (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) was two for three at the plate.  Shortstop Katelyn Miele (jr. Flanders, NJ/Pope John XXIII) produced a double. 

The Profs had a 3-0 lead after the third inning.  Labas drove in Snead with a single for the first run.  Arcella and Labas crossed the plate on DeYoung’s double.  The Profs added one run in the fourth and sixth innings.  In the fourth, Arcella knocked in right fielder Katie Bussman (so. Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) with a double to left field.  Pinch runner Christina Lee (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) came home on a fielder’s choice in the sixth inning.

In the nightcap, Krysti Maronski (jr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/GCIT) recorded her third straight shutout.  She (7-1) only gave up three hits and had four strikeouts.  Righty Chelsea Batelli (fr. Wayne, NJ/DePaul Catholic) was the losing pitcher.  She (3-4) allowed four hits and three unearned runs.

DeYoung produced three hits in three at bats and scored one run.  Catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) was one for three with one run scored.  Snead scored one run. 

All three runs came in the bottom of the first inning.  Snead reached base on an error and went to second.  She stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Arcella.  DeYoung and Lee both came home on an error with second baseman Alysa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) at the plate. 

Next, Rowan travels to Centenary College on Thursday, April 4 for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
