Softball Sweeps The College of New Jersey, 4-0 and 5-2

EWING, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept The College of New Jersey, 4-0 and   5-2 in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday.

The Profs, ranked 11th, are 30-4 overall and 11-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  The 24th ranked Lions have a 21-9 record and they are 8-4 in the conference.

In the opener, right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) earned her 17th win on the season.  She (17-2) only allowed one hit and had six strikeouts.  Ashtin Helmer (fr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) was the losing pitcher.  She (13-2) went 5.1 innings and gave up three runs, two earned.

Rowan second baseman Alysa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) contributed with two hits (three at bats), a double and two RBIs.  Third baseman Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) recorded a home run.  Catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) registered two hits in three at bats, one double and scored one run.  First baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) chipped in with two hits (four at bats) and a double.  Pinch runner Christina Lee (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) scored one run.

The Profs led 1-0 after left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) scored on an error in the first inning.  She reached base with a single to center field.  In the fourth inning, Romero drove in Meaghan Lee with a double to left center.  Romero had a RBI single in the sixth, scoring Christina Lee.  Phillips’ home run to left field came in the seventh inning.  

Righty Krysti Maronski (jr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/GCIT) was the wining pitcher in the second game.  She (11-1) scattered nine hits and gave up two unearned runs.  Pitcher Alex Carisone (jr. Branchburg, NJ/Rutgers Prep) took the loss.  In 4.1 innings, she (3-2) allowed six hits and four earned runs.

Labas produced two hits (four at bats), a home run and three RBIs.  Arcella contributed with one hit, one RBI and one run scored.  Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) tallied one hit and scored two runs.  Designated player Ashley DeYoung (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) was two for four with a double and one RBI.  Center fielder Shannon Costello (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) registered two hits in three at bats.

For the Lions, shortstop Kristen Lake (jr. Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) went three for three with a double and one run scored.  Center fielder Liz Huttner (sr. Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) had two hits (four at bats). 

In the first inning, DeYoung put Rowan on the scoreboard with a RBI single that scored Snead.  The Profs were up 5-0 after four runs in the fifth inning.  Arcella singled in Phillips and Labas followed with a three-run homer.  It was her eighth home run on the season.  TCNJ’s runs came in the sixth inning.  Pinch runner Kristen Fitzsimmons (fr. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) and Lake both crossed the plate on an error.

Next, Rowan hosts conference opponent Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m.
