HAVERFORD, PA – The Rowan University softball team split a doubleheader at Haverford College on Tuesday. The Fords won the first game, 7-2 and the Profs took the second, 12-3. The second game was called in the top of the sixth inning due to darkness.
Haverford has a 3-1 record while Rowan is 4-2 on the season. In the first game, right-hander Emily Winesett was the winning pitcher. She (2-0) scattered five hits and gave up two unearned runs. Righty LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) had the loss. In four innings, she (2-2) allowed four hits and three runs, two were earned.
Catcher Kristin Tatum led the Fords with two hits (two at bats), a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored. Pinch hitter Sarah Brody and Julie Garlick chipped in with one hit and one RBI apiece.
For the Profs, catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) was two for four with a double. Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) contributed with one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Second baseman Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) had one hit and scored one run.
Rowan got one run in the first inning and Haverford tied the score in the bottom of the second. Arcella reached base on an error and later scored on a passed ball. Tatum was hit by a pitch and came home because of an error. The Fords went ahead 7-1 with two runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth. The Profs’ final run was in the sixth inning. Left fielder Dana Cafone (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) got on base due to an error. She scored on Snead’s single through the right side.
In the nightcap, right-hander Krysti Maronski (jr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/GCIT) earned the win. She (1-0) allowed five hits and two earned runs. Lefty Claire Fitzgerald was the losing pitcher. She (0-1) threw 1.2 innings and gave up 10 hits.
At the plate, Maronski was three for four with two RBIs, a double and one run scored. Third baseman Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) registered two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Right fielder Katie Bussman (so. Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) recorded a grand slam in the second inning. First baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) added two hits (three at bats), a double, one RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Shannon Costello (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) totaled four hits in four at bats and scored one run. Lee scored two runs and Snead had one run scored.
In the first inning, Lee put Rowan ahead 1-0 when she scored on an error. The Profs led 9-1 after eight runs in the top of the second. Labas drove in one run with a double while Maronski and Phillips each had a RBI single. Maronski came home on an error and Bussman recorded the grand slam. Haverford scored one run in the bottom of the second.
Rowan added one run in the third inning. Arcella reached base with a single and was knocked in with a base hit by Maronski. Haverford produced two runs in the fourth and trailed 10-3. The Profs tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Pinch runners Allison Nolan (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) and Katherine Carberry (so. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) both scored on wild pitches.
Next, Rowan travels to Kissimmee, FL for the Rebel Spring Games from Saturday, March 16 through Friday, March 22. On the first day, the softball team plays the Coast Guard Academy at 3 p.m. and Lake Forest College at 5 p.m.
