GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won 12-3 in five innings and 6-0 against Ursinus College on Wednesday. The Profs, ranked 22nd, have an 11-game win streak.
In the first game, first baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) recorded a grand slam and tied the school record for home runs in a career. She has five this season for a career total of 25. Labas shares the mark with Nicolina Veneziano (2009-2012). Rowan is 15-3 overall and Ursinus has a 6-6 record on the season.
Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) had the win on the mound in the opener. In three innings, she (9-2) gave up three hits and one earned run. Righty Jamie Lambe (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) threw the final two innings. Zoe Heinke (fr. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) was the losing pitcher.
Profs’ third baseman Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) contributed with two hits (two at bats), three RBIs and one run scored. Second baseman Alysa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) added one hit in three at bats, one RBI and two runs scored. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and designated player Ashley DeYoung (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) each registered one hit (two at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and right fielder Katie Bussman (so. Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) chipped in with one RBI and two runs scored apiece.
For the Bears, center fielder Delia Mercurio (so. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) was two for three at the plate with one RBI. First baseman Allison Pfrommer (sr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and right fielder Caitlin Whelan (jr. Stanhope, NJ/Pope John XXIII Reg.) each had one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Left fielder Ellen Goldstein (so. Doylestown, PA/C.B. West) scored one run.
Ursinus tied the score at one in the top of the second inning. Rowan took the lead with two runs in the bottom half. Phillips drove in Romero with a base hit and Bussman crossed the plate on Snead’s sacrifice fly. The Profs posted nine runs in the third inning. Labas scored on an error and DeYoung came home on a walk by Bussman. Phillips had a two-RBI single and Bussman scored on Arcella's single. Labas followed with the grand slam home run. The Bears’ last two runs were in the fourth inning.
Right-hander Krysti Maronski (jr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/GCIT) recorded the shutout in the second contest. She (5-1) scattered eight hits and struck out seven batters. Pitcher Kelly Schymanski (sr. Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) took the loss. She (2-3) gave up six runs, four were earned.
Snead totaled three hits (four at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. DeYoung went two for three at the plate with two RBIs. Labas produced one hit (three at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Romero had one hit (two at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Arcella collected two hits and scored two runs.
Shortstop Amy Gentile (sr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) and Pfrommer each tallied two hits for Ursinus in the second game. Third baseman Monica Bonitatis (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.), designated player Emelie McFarland (sr. Sykesville, MD/Century), Whelan and Mercurio all had one hit.
Rowan got on the scoreboard with three runs in the first inning. DeYoung ripped a single through the right side that scored Snead and Arcella. Romero had a sacrifice fly that brought home Labas. The Profs added two more runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth. Labas knocked in Snead and Arcella with a single in the fifth. Romero scored in the sixth on a base hit by Snead up the middle.
