KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team ended its spring break trip with wins over Springfield College, 4-2 and Utica College, 6-0 on Friday. The Profs have a 13-3 record with a nine-game win streak.
Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) was the winning pitcher against Springfield. She (8-2) pitched a complete game and gave up two earned runs. Righty Jennifer Joseph had the loss on the mound. Joseph (2-3) allowed four earned runs.
Prof center fielder Shannon Costello (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) was two for three with a three-run homer. Catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) contributed with two hits in three at bats, a double, one RBI and one run scored. Third base Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) added two hits in three trips to the plate. First baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) and right fielder Katie Bussman (so. Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) each chipped in with one hit. Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and second baseman Alysa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) scored one run apiece.
For the Pride (3-6), designated player Brielle Engelbrecht produced a home run. Pinch hitter Caitie Holik was one for one with one RBI. Right fielder Christina Leader and first baseman Breann Joyce each registered two hits (four at bats). Shortstop Kelly Blake had one hit while left fielder Jenna Webb scored one run.
The Profs got on the scoreboard in the first inning. Snead led off with a walk, stole second and went to third on Labas’ ground out. Lee drove in Snead with a double to center field. Engelbrecht tied the score with a home run to left field in the fourth inning Rowan was ahead 4-1 after three runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Lee had a single up the middle. After the second out, Romero was hit by a pitch. Costello followed with a home run to left field. Springfield scored its final run in the sixth. Holik had a RBI base hit that scored Webb.
Versus Utica (5-4), right-hander Krysti Maronski (jr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/GCIT) threw five innings for the victory. She (4-1) only allowed one hit. Righty Beth Ann Hyland (fr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) pitched the final two innings. Abby Monroe was the losing pitcher. In four innings, she (3-2) gave up seven hits and five runs, three were earned.
Bussman went two for three with one run scored. Romero recorded a two-run homer. Snead contributed with two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Labas registered two hits in four at bats and one RBI. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and Phillips each had one hit and one run scored. Lee chipped in with a double and Costello scored one run.
With the bases loaded, Snead walked in the second inning and Costello scored Rowan’s first run. In the fourth, Bussman led off with a single down the left field line and Romero followed with a home run to left field. Snead got on base with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. Arcella crossed the plate on a passed ball. Labas drove in Phillips with a base hit down the right field line in the sixth inning.
Next week, Rowan hosts Ursinus College in the home opener on Thursday, March 28 at 3 p.m.
