Softball Takes Two At Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Rowan University softball team won two games at the Virginia Wesleyan College Beach Blast on Saturday.  The Profs defeated Neumann University, 9-2 and William Peace University, 4-0.

Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) pitched two innings in relief for the win against Neumann.  Miller (1-1) only gave up one hit and had two strikeouts.  Righty Allyson Parris (so. Salem, NJ/Salem) took the loss.  She allowed nine runs, seven earned, in 6.2 innings.

Right fielder Katie Bussman (so. Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) led the way with two hits (four at bats), four RBIs, a double and one run scored.  Left fielder Dana Cafone (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) was one for two with two runs scored.  First baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) and designated player Ashley DeYoung (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) each chipped in with two hits and one run scored.  Third baseman Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) and shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) had one hit and two RBIs apiece.  Center fielder Shannon Costello (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) recorded a home run.   

For Neumann, second baseman Becca Reinhart (so. Shoemakersville, PA/Central Catholic) was two for three with one run scored.  Catcher Courtney O’Connor (fr. Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink) posted a home run.  Center fielder Allie White (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) and Parris had one hit apiece.   

The Profs got on the scoreboard with one run in the top of the second inning and the Knights tied the score in the bottom half.  Costello and O’Connor exchanged solo shots.  Neumann went up   2-1 in the third.  Reinhart reached base with a single up the middle and later came home on an error.

Rowan took the lead (6-2) with five runs in the sixth inning.  Phillips drove in the first run with a single.  Bussman produced a two RBI double and Snead knocked in two runs with a single.  The Profs tacked on three runs in the seventh inning.  Labas crossed the plate on an error.  Bussman recorded a two RBI single to left field.

In a complete game, Miller (2-1) only gave up two hits against William Peace.  She (2-1) struck out 10 batters.  Aaryn Deal was the losing pitcher.  She allowed seven hits and three earned runs in five innings.

Cafone was two for two at the plate and scored two runs.  Second baseman Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) produced two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored.  Catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), DeYoung and Costello all had one hit and one RBI.  Snead scored one run. 

The Profs went up 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Lee walked with the bases full and Cafone scored.  DeYoung’s single knocked in Snead.  Arcella came home on a bases loaded walk by Costello.  Rowan’s final run came in the sixth.  Arcella had a single through the right side, scoring Cafone.     

Next, Rowan (3-1) travels to Haverford College on Tuesday, March 5 for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
