KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team won two more games at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday. The Profs defeated Springfield College, 5-4 and Utica College, 6-4.
Rowan has a 9-3 record. Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) earned the win in relief against Springfield. Miller (5-2) went 4.2 innings and gave up two unearned runs. Righty Ashley Marino took the loss. In six innings, she allowed eight hits and five earned runs. Marino struck out six batters.
Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) went two for three with three RBIs and a home run for the Profs. First baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) contributed two hits (four at bats), one double, one RBI and one run scored. Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) had two hits in four at bats and one run scored. Right fielder Katie Bussman (so. Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) chipped in with one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Center fielder Shannon Costello (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) registered one hit in three trips to the plate and scored one run.
For the Pride, designated player Jenna Webb was three for four with a home run and two RBIs. Right fielder Christina Leader collected three hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. First baseman Breann Joyce went two for four while third baseman Melissa Nelson had one hit (three at bats) and one run scored.
In the top of the first inning, Rowan produced two runs and Springfield tied the score in the bottom half. Labas knocked in Snead with a double to left field. Bussman had a RBI single to left center, scoring Labas. Webb recorded a two-run homer to center field.
The Profs went ahead with three runs in the fourth inning. Arcella posted a three-run home run to left field. The Pride pulled within one after two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Both runs came on errors.
Labas recorded a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to win the game over Utica. Designated player Ashley DeYoung (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) had a solo home run and Arcella added one hit, one RBI and one run scored. Third baseman Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) and Costello totaled two hits (three at bats) and one run scored apiece.
Miller (6-2) had her second win on the day. She pitched one inning of relief and allowed one hit and one unearned run. Cassidy Thompson was the losing pitcher.
The Pioneers’ designated player Mallory Ingalls was two for four at the plate with a home run. Second baseman Dominque Carcone contributed with one hit (two at bats) and one RBI. Shortstop Alysa Russell, third baseman Meghan Matan and left fielder Christy Taraglia each registered one hit and one run scored.
Rowan was up 3-0 after two runs in the second inning and one in the third. Arcella posted a sacrifice fly in the second that brought home Phillips. Costello crossed the plate on an error with Snead at bat. DeYoung’s home run came in the third inning.
Utica got on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the fourth. Ingalls had a solo home run and Carcone produced a sacrifice fly. The Pioneers took the lead in the top of the seventh. Matan and Traglia both came home on an error. In the bottom of the seventh, Arcella was hit by a pitch and catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) reached base with a single. Labas’ home run went to left field. It was her fourth on the season.
Next, Rowan plays McDaniel College and Anderson University at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. respectively on Wednesday, March 20.
